For at least twenty years the U.S. has had people, i.e. mainly women
and children kidnapped from our soil. They disappear almost unnoticed
and their cases are never solved. The other day I heard a rumor that
many, if not all of these children end up in the Soviet Union or are
even held prisoner in our country by Russian citizens. Last year alone
one half a million immegrants entered this country illegally and I
believe they come mostly from the Soviet Union. Then I heard there was
an announcement on KQED (S.F) that the Russians were going to release
those they had kidnapped so many years ago, to be this month and the
venue to be the Salsman Park in Nova Scotia. I would like to hear more
about this, believing that this would one giant step toward world
peace.

I do not believe this story to be true. But if it were true, I would
expect that, rather than advancing the cause of peace, an event of
this sort would arouse an immense wave of outrage in the American
public, and a desire for retribution against those responsible for the
kidnappings. In the eyes of most Americans, the supposed largesse of
the abductors in freeing their prisoners would be negligible in
comparison to the enormity of the crime and the suffering of the
captives and their loved ones.
