Question ID: 325942
My System: Intel PIII/933 MHz; 256.0 MB RAM; 27.9 GB hard drive
(FAT32); Windows 98SE; MS Office Prof.; Norton SystemWorks 2002; HP
ScanJet ADF; Lexmark Optra T614; Speedline DSL; various other
software. The Problem: When I'm in "Inbox" side of OE and hit "Send"
to send an e-mail (with or without an attachment), this message pops
up: "OUTLOOK EXPRESS -- Some errors occurred while processing the
requested tasks. Please review the list of errors below for more
details. -- Task Tab: Send 1 message(s) using popmail.voicenet ....
failed .... Connection: Local Area Network. Error Tab: An unknown
error has occurred.  Protocol:  SMPT; Port:  0; Secure (SSL):  no;
Error Number: 0x800C0131."
Remember, the message above is what I get when I'm in the "Inbox" side
and hit "Send". The message and its attachment, if there is one, gets
bumped into the "Outbox" where I can then, usually (but not always),
send it. Sometimes, I get one of those "an illegal operation has been
performed, etc." and I have to shut down OE. Then I have to go to
SystemWorks and run Norton Disk Doctor (NDD) where I discover that "a
cluster is missing in one of the chains", etc. Then I use NDD to fix
this by finding the lost cluster and putting it in the root directory
-- all very tedious! ONE LAST STRANGE OBSERVATION: When I'm on the
"Sent Items" side of OE and try and send an e-mail (with or without an
attachment), it usually works! Can someone help me pinpoint and fix
this problem?

Hi frank2,

Here you go - please read all of the links before proceeding.

Unknown error has occurred. Protocol: SMTP Port: 0 Secure: No [SSL]
Error: 0x800c0131

Error: 0x800c0131:
"To fix it, try first to compact all your folders in Offline mode."

Compact Your OE Folders:
"In the OE Folder list (View| Layout| Folder List), click Outlook
Express so that no mail or news folder is open. Now click File| Work
Offline so that no new messages will be arriving. Finally, click File|
Folder| Compact All Folders. This process can take several minutes and
you should not attempt to use your computer until it is finished. If
an error occurs, such as "cannot compact, folder in use", just close
OE, wait a second or two, then re-open OE and begin the process again.
This will compact not only your news folders, but also all of your
mail folders and the all-important Folders.dbx."
http://insideoe.tomsterdam.com/files/maintain.htm#compact

If that doesn't help, you'll need to rename your Folders.dbx file:

MICROSOFT
Unknown error has occurred. Protocol: SMTP Port: 0 Secure: No [SSL]
Error: 0x800c0131
CAUSE
This behavior can occur if the Folders.dbx file is missing, damaged,
or using the read-only attribute.
RESOLUTION
Rename the Folders.dbx file:

   1. Click Start, point to Find, and then click Files or Folders.
   2. In the Named box, type folders.dbx.
   3. In the Look In box, click your primary hard disk (usually drive
C), and then click Find Now.
   4. Right-click the Folders.dbx file, and then click Rename.
   5. Type folders.old, and then click OK.
   6. Start Outlook Express. This creates a new Folders.dbx file automatically.

"To fix it, try first to compact all your folders in Offline mode. If
the problem continues, close OE and rename or delete Folders.dbx in
your Identity's store folder, but *please read the consequences*
before you do so. When you re-open OE, it will create a new
Folders.dbx automatically."

Dealing with lost emails:

microsoft.public.windows.inetexplorer.ie6_outlookexpress:
"Don't store messages in the Inbox. It is the folder most apt to be
corrupted. As soon as you read them move them to user created folders.
Which appears to be what has happened to yours. Then compact the Inbox
regularly.

Go to Tools | Options | Maintenance | Store Folder and write down where OE
is storing its data.
Close OE.
Go there with Windows Explorer and move (not copy) Inbox.dbx to an empty
Windows
folder. With Win2K and WinXP it will be a hidden file.

You can use this tool to extract the messages from the old DBX file:

DBXtract (free): http://www.oehelp.com/DBXtract/

With a large file this can take a long time, so let it keep running.

The messages can be dragged from a Windows folder back into an OE folder in
OE's Folder List."

"I'd also suggest you go to this section of his site and do the maintenance
of OE as he suggests:
http://insideoe.tomsterdam.com/files/maintain.htm
Make sure "Compact in background" is UNCHECKED as this is a file corrupter
and may be what caused your problem to start with. As mentioned above,
after doing the maintenance you want, and doing an "Offline" compaction of
all folders, close OE, then re-open it to see if your problem is resolved.
I usually do a Standard ScanDisk, Defrag then Reboot after all the
maintenance, and you'll recover all that hard drive space, and OE will run
more efficiently."
