My young daughter (age 12) loves to play animated computer games, such
as the LucasArts Monkey Island, Full Throttle, Indiana Jones, Sam and
Max, and the Day of the Tentacle. She also loved to play Little Big
Adventure I and II, and the first Tex Murphy game, Under a Killing
Moon.

Now that LucasArts has cancelled the Full Throttle and Sam and Max
sequels, she's been quite disappointed.

I'd like to see some suggestions of games similar to the ones listed
above, as an Easter present for her.

Hi drappier,

It sounds like your daughter has good taste in adventure games. Sam
and Max, Day of the Tentacle, Full Throttle, and Under a Killing Moon
are all commonly regarded as some of the best adventure games ever
made.

The whole Sam and Max sequel cancellation affair has a lot of people
pretty upset. So upset that there's even an online petition to have
the cancellation cancelled if you will. Well, that may be going a
little too far if you ask me, but people take these sorts of things
seriously! If you want to join in this petition you can find it here:
http://www.petitiononline.com/LACOSAM/petition.html

But on to your question of other good adventure games that your
daughter might like. I'll list some below, with links to reviews and
to sites you can buy them online.

- Syberia -

This might be a possibility, though it is less 'cartoony' than the
other titles you mentioned. It's about a young female lawyer who is
sent to an alpine village to settle an inheritance. This might not
sound like much of a premise for an adventure (unless maybe to a
lawyer) but the game was heaped with all sorts of awards when it came
out. GameSpot gave it PC Adventure Game of the Year in 2002, IGN.com
gave it the Reader's Choice best adventure title 2002, Gamespy also
gave it top honours in the adventure category. Given this much prais
it's probably something you should take a look at.

Reviews are here:

and here:

and here:

If your daughter finds that she likes Siberia she won't have to wait
for a sequel because Siberia II has recently been released (last week
I think).

Syberia is available from EBGames.com for $19.99 here:

- Broken Sword -

This is a whole series of games, the first of which is Broken Sword:
Circle of Blood (originally released in Europe as Broken Sword: The
Shadow of the Templars, a better name if you ask me). The story
revolves around George Stobbart, a Californian on vacation in Paris
who witnesses a bizarre interaction between a well dressed gentleman
and a clown. In your quest to find the clown (who appears to have
killed the gentleman and stolen his briefcase) you uncover an evil
plan.

The first game is pretty old (released 1996) but there have been a
couple of releases since then. The latest is Broken Sword 3: The
Sleeping Dragon, released just last December. This one has George and
his sidekick Nico (picked up in game 1) heading to Paris for various
reasons. Just after they arrive a murder takes place which leads them
off into an adventure.

and it's available for purchase for $24.95 from shop.com here:

- The Longest Journey -

This is an older game (released 2000) but is very well regarded among
adventure fans. The main character is an 18-year-old girl named
April, an art history student who has the ability to exist between two
worlds, the present a 23rd century future filled with all sorts of
strange happenings. It's content is a little more mature than the
other two, and it's rated M where the other titles were rated T for
teen. This may be a consideration for you. The game has been
criticized by some as being too slow, though hardcore adventure fans
generally think otherwise.

Anyway, reviews of the game are here:

and here:

it's available for $14.95 from dirtcheapsoftware.com here:

Finally, if your daughter really likes the LucasArts games but isn't
too fussy about having the latest stuff, you might want to take a look
at the Lucas Archives. The various discs have the best of their early
games and are very reasonably priced.

New and used copies are available at Amazon starting at $12.95. Links

Best of luck picking a game. I hope this has helped you out.

Black and White is another fun game that you may consider. It may be a
bit hard for a 12 year old.

Day of the Tentacle and Full Throttle (and Sam and Max??) were all
created by a game designer named Tim Schaffer. He recently started a
company called "DoubleFine". Another game he created while working at
Lucas Arts was "Grim Fandango", which has been called one of the
greatest adventure games of all time. If your daughter likes adventure
games (puzzle solving type of thing), she might also like the games in
the Myst series. I believe you can get "myst", "riven" and "exile" in
a pack together for relatively cheap in a store like best buy.
