What kind of RAM chips does my Dell server use?

My RAM in my Dell PowerEdge 600SC server has gone bad.

1. Do I need to buy Dell ram, or can I use anything? Does the Dell
ram cost more, does it have advantages?
2. If I want to buy Dell ram, can you send me a link?
3. If I want non-dell RAM, can you send me a link?

Hello sherpaj:

The Dell PowerEdge 600SC uses ECC DDR PC2100 RAM, with four memory
slots available on the motherboard. The system can support up to 4 GB
of memory using 1 GB memory modules.

You do not need to purchase replacement memory from Dell. In my
opinion, it is better to use after-market memory from a reliable brand
such as Crucial. Here is the Crucial search page results for the Dell
PowerEdge 600SC:

http://www.crucial.com/store/listparts.asp?Mfr%2BProductline=Dell%2BPowerEdge&mfr=Dell&cat=RAM&model=PowerEdge+600SC&submit=Go

In particular, the recommended parts are:

256MB - CT268919
512MB - CT268920
1.0GB - CT268918

Buying directly from Crucial using the above link is probably the
fastest way to get your replacement memory.

Hope this helps,

The Dell-recommended replacement memory, incidentally, is listed here:

http://search.dell.com/results.aspx?k2=dell poweredge
600sc&snpc=memory zzfastzz&snpsc=&man=&ss=&cp1=&cp2=&k=poweredge&s=biz&cat=snp&snpsb=k&snpsd=a&cs=555&l=en&c=us

Dell typically uses Kingston as their memory supplier:

http://www.ec.kingston.com/ecom/configurator/modelsinfo.asp?SysID=+12469+&distributor=0&submit1=Search

Clearly, buying the memory from Kingston directly is not an option,
their 'direct' prices are at a premium!

Sorry, that Dell search results URL did not come through well in the
above clarification. Try this shorter version instead:

http://search.dell.com/results.aspx?k2=600sc&snpc=memory&k=poweredge&s=biz&cat=snp&snpsb=k&snpsd=a&cs=555&l=en&c=us
