Hi cbknj~

Many experts firmly believe that it?s best to submit your website to
the major search engines yourself, rather than having a submittal
company do it for you. I agree. You'll find that you do it more
effectively, and that mass submissions rarely produce the sort of
targeted, reliable results business owners hope for. When you have
another organization do the submitting for you, they may very easily
not follow each search engine?s ?rules.? And that means your site
won?t get listed.

Fortunately, submitting your website to search engines is easy.

? At Google, go to ://www.google.com/addurl.html (also, be sure
to read ?How Do I Get My Site Listed on Google??

? At Yahoo, go to http://submit.search.yahoo.com/free/request

Most other search engines get their information from these two. If
there are other engines you want to submit to, just go to their home
page and search for ?submit a site,? ?suggest a site,? or ?add url.?
For a list of major search engines, go to ?Major Search Engines &
Directories? at Search Engine Watch:
http://searchenginewatch.com/links/article.php/2156221

If you want to submit to many engines all at once, you can try Site
Owners: http://www.siteowners.com/sitesubmission.shtml But again, I
urge you to do your submitting to each engine yourself, one at a time.

Also, it?s important not to submit your website over and over again,
as this sort of spamming will result in no listing at all.

Before you submit anything, however, you should have a good
description of your site, about 25 words in length. Use two or three
keywords in this description, and veer away from anything that might
sound like an ad (i.e.: The very best in jock straps! Buy yours today
for only ten cents!!!). For tips on using keywords effectively, check
out ?Which Keywords Should You Optimize Your Site For?? Site Owners:
http://www.siteowners.com/article011.shtml

If your site is commercial, and you decide you need to be listed in
search engines *now,* I recommend that you read ?Search Engine
Submission Tips? by Search Engine Watch:
http://searchenginewatch.com/webmasters/index.php This article goes
into great depth about how best to submit your website to search
engines and get listings right away. All the suggestions really rely
on paying for submissions.

You can optimize your search engine listing(s), too. When you do this,
you help ensure a higher place in search engine results:

* How many links to your site are there? The more legitimate links to
your site, the more ?important? the search engine will believe it to
be. Do not, however, ?participate in link schemes designed to increase
your site's ranking or PageRank. In particular, avoid links to web
spammers or ?bad neighborhoods? on the web as your own ranking may be
affected adversely by those links." (?Quality Guidelines,? Google:

* Relevant content. Use keywords in your text that people are likely
to search under, but don?t go overboard. For each term, make sure it?s
included in relevant content on your website.

* Website design. See ?Webmaster Guidelines? by Google for detailed
information: ://www.google.com/webmasters/guidelines.html

referenced superb articles that referenced other superb articles. In
