Please try this: go to "View", then to "Explorer Bar." If "Favorites"
is checked, uncheck it.

If this solves your problem, I'll be pleased to post this information
as the answer to your question.

daij1944...

The favorites link you are seeking should be on the very
top menu bar, above the explorer bar, and should be in a
lineup as follows:

File Edit View Favorites Tools Help

Are you saying that 'Favorites' is missing from this lineup,
or are you simply clicking on the wrong 'Favorites'?

Also, the shortcut for this menu item is 'Alt + a'.
If you don't see the menu item, try that, and see if it works.

Let me know where this takes you...

thanks but the issue turned out to be that there are two "favorites"
the one on the file edit view favorites ... line and the other on the
explorer toolbar.

i hadn;t realized they functioned differently

I'm glad that we were able to get to the bottom of your mystery! I am
posting this as an Answer in order to help close the question.

I too prefer to use the Favorites pull-down menu instead of the
side-frame; at the same time, I know some people who hate the
pull-down, and love the side-frame. To each their own!

In my case, in order to prevent myself from accidentally hitting the
button and popping open the side-frame, I have edited the IE Standard
Toolbar to remove the Favorites button. If you have IE5.0 or later,
you can do this too:

- right-click on the toolbar, and select 'Customize...'
- on the 'Current Toolbar Buttons' list, scroll down to the
'Favorites' button, and click on it
- click on the '<-Remove' button to remove it from the toolbar
- click 'Close'

If you do this, the button won't be there on the toolbar any more to
tempt you into clicking it.

Hope this helps!

The 'Favorites' button on your toolbar will always turn on/off the
Favorites Explorer Bar (the frame on the left), this has been the
default behavior for the Favorites button for at least the last few
versions of Internet Explorer.

To get the drop-down list, you need to use the 'Favorites' menu on
your Menu bar. This is the bar that says: "File Edit View Favorites
Tools Help", and is normally located at the top of your Internet
Explorer window.

If the Menu bar is missing, then that is a different issue completely,
possibly due to a virus. Please let us know if your Menu bar is
missing!
