Allow me to start this Answer by assuring you that the download
available from Netgear is the best available source of a replacement
driver for your Netgear FA511. This is the only way to be certain that
you are using the latest and greatest version of the drivers.
The problem you encountered with downloading the drivers and unzipping
them properly can be overcome with the appropriate software. The
Windows drivers will all unzip using WinZIP or another compatible
program. As you mention completely restoring the hard drive, I presume
that you are using Windows 98 (which is what the 1270 shipped with
originally). If so, then it will be necessary to download and install
a utility that can open and extract files from a ZIP file. The most
commonly used program for this is WinZIP:
http://www.winzip.com/downwzeval.htm
You may try out the software for a 21-day period before it is
necessary to purchase a license. If you do not wish to use
'trial-ware', then consider downloading:
http://www.7-zip.org/
7Zip is free for personal use, and can handle more file types than WinZIP.
Regardless of which one you download (I personally would recommend
7Zip), you will need to install it before you can open up a zip file.
After you install it you will be able to open up the driver file that
you download from Netgear:
ftp://downloads.netgear.com/files/netgear1/FA511_200.zip
If the downloaded file does not end up on your hard drive exactly as
"FA511_200.zip", then there may be a problem with your web browser, in
which case I would appreciate it if you responded (using the Request
Answer Clarification button above) and told me what browser you are
using (example: Internet Explorer).
After you have downloaded the file, and assuming that the utility you
installed is working properly on your PC, you should be able to
double-click on the file to open it, then use the Extract feature of
the utility to copy the driver installation files to your hard drive.
If you have chosen to use WinZIP, please make sure you choose to
extract all files, and to "Use folder names". If you are using 7Zip,
then the simplest way to extract the files properly is to simply open
the ZIP file with 7Zip, open up a File Explorer window to the drive
where you want the driver files to be, then drag the "FA511_200"
folder from the ZIP file to your File Explorer window.
Once you have the driver files extracted, go to Control Panel>Add New
Hardware, and try installing your FA511 adapter again. When asked for
the drivers, browse to the location where you unzipped the files, open
up the "WIN98" folder, and select the "NETFA511.INF" file that you
will find there.
Please let me know if you run into any problems installing the ZIP
utility and/or downloading the driver file, I will be able to help
you.
