Thank you for posting your findings as a comment.

I have mailed the author of:
http://dan.themanse.org/webdesign/comebackalive/comebackalive/chapter07/
asking him to provide me with more information as to his source for
the statement that ?A recent study showed that even though there are
16 million active scuba divers another 75 million Americans would like
to scuba dive.?

I thought I'd give him the benefit of the doubt even though these
figures seem implausible.

I am aware that this is a hard nut to crack and appreciate your efforts.

I have decided to cancel this question because I have become convinced
that the answer cannot be determined with any degree of accuracy, due
to a lack of published information.

Hi forsytha!

I am posting this as a comment as I was not able to locate enough
relevant information for a complete answer.

?The Caribbean, for instance, attracts about 57% of the world?s 10
million active SCUBA divers and it has been estimated that by the year
2005, diving will generate about $1.2 billion annually.?

?Teaching people to dive is big business. Diving courses are on offer
from Scapa Flow to Sharm el Sheikh, and from Weymouth to Waikiki. For
£500 or less you can fly to the Red Sea and learn to dive with decent
accommodation included in the deal. In the United States alone there
are believed to be five million active scuba divers, and in this
country more than 250,000 people have tried it at least once. PADI,
the largest diver training agency, has issued more than 10 million
scuba certificates worldwide in the past 30 years.

I found a reference stating that there are 2 million active scuba
divers in the United States

"The Divers Alert Network has reported 2,853 fatalities in the United
States in the last 30 years - an average of about 100 deaths per year.
Currently there are at least 2 million active scuba divers in the
United States." http://www.seagrant.wisc.edu/madisonjason11/sg_science_text.html

Hi bobbie7,

I'm currently working on extrapolating figures from these statistics:

http://www.padi.com/english/common/padi/statistics/

PADI's best estimate is between 5-7 million worldwide, which was the
figure I had estimated myself. So for the time being, I'll go with
that.

I appreciate your help.

Regards,

forsytha
