I'm looking for online references to John Calvin Roseborough, a white
man who was born before 1850 near Fairfield, South Carolina and was
known as a "lenient" slave master. He had a son born in July, 1850
(the son's name was Sandy, but he was illegitimate and won't appear in
official records).

I found a "John C. Roseborough" in Fairfield, SC via familysearch.org,
but that person's listed date of death is too early for him to have
been Sandy's father. There's also a "John Cupit Roseborough" listed
on that site. Please tell me if you find any links (on any web sites
you search, not just familysearch.org) to "John CALVIN Roseborough,"
not just the middle initial or a different middle name. Thanks.

Carl

This may be helpful for my colleagues:

The 1850 Census of Fairfield County, SC lists only one "John C.
Roseborough", a 50-year-old planter:

Ten years later, the 1860 Federal Census of Fairfield County, SC again
lists only one person whose initials and age indicate that he might be
identical with the "John C. Roseborough" from 1850. It is one "J. C.
Roseborough", 59 years of age (since Census records use full years
only, a difference of +/- 1 year is normal), white, male, with
considerable property:

According to ancestry.com there is a person who is listed as Jno
Roseborough in the 1870 census as being 50 years old with a birthplace
of South Carolina and currently living in Bedford, Tenn.

There is also a Sandy Roseborough listed in the 1880 census as being
born in 1850-1851 born in South Carolina and living at that time in
Mitchell, Georgia.
