Dear Friends, Hi! I am Choudhary Harekrishna D at this end...... I am obtaining the evolutionary nature of our cosmos that we have observed with experiments till date... and well am planning to go ahead and create a movie out of the experimental data which would have the observed events recorded in it... However ... when I have treaded on this idea what I find is lack of storage space... the entire data is 9.5 terabytes and of this data say if I need or would look for a few terabytes to store than where and how (on the internet could it be possible) can I store in a complete cost effective manner...? How cost effective is cost effective then well I would prefer to have something absolutely freee... or the devices which would be cheapest to store this level of data... could someone who answers this question let me know the minimum budget that would be required to store this data in terabytes... |

You are looking for a free 9.5 terabytes to store data? (I hear little chickens...) Have you considered trying to get someone to sponser your project (eg EMC, Netapps, etc.)? I guess you could sign up for 9,500 Google email accounts and that would work. (each google email account will be allowed to hold 1 gig of information) Is your expectation this be in a flat file or some commercial RDBMS? |

I´m not really sure if you are kidding. If you´re not: I know (and tested) a provider that offers 1,5 GB webspace for just ? 8,88 a month. till-ga |

To add to the above comment from my colleague till-ga, in addition to your desire to find a provider of storage space, choudhary-ga, you will also need to ensure that you have sufficient bandwidth in your connection to the data in order to be able to use it. For example, many residential broadband connections are limited to 10 GB or less per month of total download, and are physically incapable of downloading much more than about 350 GB per month. If you are employed at a university with optical networking interconnections to the Internet, you may be able to requisition access at the orders of magnitude you need, as long as your department budget can pay for it. One comment recommends using cheap internet storage, the other using
high-end NAS solutions.
My proposal is somewhere in the middle:
Build your own terabyte server for about $ 1000 / terabyte. You would
get huge high-speed storage for your needs for a few k$. Here is my
calculation:
4 IDE disks of 250 GB each, for 200 $ each = $ 800
old PC with two IDE slots, 128MB ram, 100Mb/s network card $ 200
linux operating system $ 0
---------
Total $ 1000 / 1 Tb
Of course you need some linux freak to set up the system (not a big deal) and
possibly a small hub or switch to connect all.
Success,
David |

My question is how much space does an IDE occupy... and what is its weight ? In other words is an IDE handy ... ? |
