Question ID: 327894
I'm trying to identify and learn about a specific company that makes
temporary housing. This housing is portable and something like might
be used after a hurricane for people whose homes have been destroyed.
It is more substantive than a tent and less substantive than a mobile
home.

The company's name has "Aspen" or "Aspen Group" as a part of it.

I need to know the following for a complete answer:

1. Name, Address, Phone Number
2. Key contacts and titles
3. Complete description of relevant products (construction, how many
people they hold, how long they last, etc.) and prices

Additionally, it would be helpful to learn any additional information
about their business such as the company's history, sales, reputation,
customers, etc.

I have tried to hunt them down without success. One business that
might be related is called "Aspen Group" and used to be located in the
Presidio in San Francisco (in 2000). See the related link below:
http://www.presidiotrust.gov/news/newsletters/nl_0800.pdf
Here is a snippet from the link "The Aspen Group: organizes the
construction, rehabilitation, and development of low and moderate
income housing" their phone number there used to be 415-398-2950, but
it has been disconnect and the Presidio says they have moved out or
just dissolved.
NOTE THAT I'M NOT SURE THIS COMPANY IS RELATED TO THE "ASPEN" I AM
LOOKING FOR - IT JUST SEEMED TO HAVE SOME STRONG SIMILARITIES

Hello Nick,

I have located a fair number of manufacturers and distributors of the
type of temporary housing you described, but none of them have the
word "Aspen" in their name.

It's difficult to conduct an in-depth search, since the word "Aspen"
is so common, and is also associated with disasters/emergencies, such
as the Aspen wildfires of a few years back. In addition, there are
many companies with Aspen or even the phrase "Aspen Group" in their
name.

It would be a great help in conducting my search, if you could provide
any additional details, such as:

--where or how did you hear about this company?

--in what time period do you think they were operating? Do you
suspect they are currenlty in business?

--what more do you know about their products? Where were they used?
What types of structures are they?

--Do you think this is an American company?

Any additional information you can provide -- no matter how tangential
it might seem -- would be a great help in tracking down the details on
this company.

Thanks a lot.

This company is currently in business, or at least bidding on
contracts. Either they are currently active or at the very least
could ramp up production if they win business.

All I know about the product is that it is more substantive than a
tent, but couldn't be stacked the way container houses could (see
www.seabox.com for container shelters)

It is almost definitely an American company.

That is really all I know - I hope you find it helpful.

I've identified several hundred companies with Aspen in the name that
do contracting for the government, but so far...none that are involved
in termporary housing. Are you 100% sure your company has an "Aspen"
in its name?

Would you happen to know the SIC or NAICS codes that cover this type
of business. I've been using SIC code 8322 (which covers "emergency
shelters") but if you know of other, relevant codes, that would be a
help to searching.

Thanks.

I wish I did know more. The lack of data is why I've placed such a
high price on the question. I would be surprised if there were more
than one Aspen involved in emergency housing, so the set of companies
matching the known facts is either small or one. I'm assuming that
the "Aspen Group" in housing that I identified is not involved in
temporary housing . . .?

Nick,

I just wanted to let you -- and other researchers -- know that I'm
running out of leads on this one, so if anyone else has any ideas of
how to approach it...feel free.

The Aspen Group that was once at the Presidio appears to be a
low-income housing management group (for, e.g. inner city permanent
housing revitalization projects), that fell on hard times around the
year 2000, defaulted on a project in San Jose, and may well now be
defunct:

It's hard to know for certain if this "Aspen Group" is one and the
same as that listed at the Presidio.

If I come up with any new leads, I'll be sure to let you know.

Best of luck....

Hi, nick37!

 In one of your clarifications you mentioned;

"This company is currently in business, or at least bidding on contracts."

*If you could shed light on how you have heard (or where you have
read) that they are currently bidding on contracts (and in what
capacity - i.e. for emergency shelter?) it may be very helpful in
ferreting this company out.

*Also, is there any possibility, at all, that the name could be
somehthing that sounds like Aspen?

I have heard third hand that this company was bidding on at least one
current emergency housing contract. Because of confidentiality, I
can't share any details on the links to the rumor but I am working
that chain myself for any additional details.

It is possible that the name of the company was altered in the
tellings - maybe Aspen is really Aspin or somesuch. I don't know

Nick,

I've done a lot of looking around in two areas -- contracts and RFP's
for emergency housing/shelters, and for companies with "Aspen",
"Aspin" or similar in their names.

I've come to the conclusion that your question is unlikely to receive
any sort of definitive answer. There's simply too little information
to go on -- and too many "Aspens" in the
construction-contractor-related business -- to be able to tell which
one (if any) might be the company you're looking for.

One intriguing possibility is an Aspen-ish company that provides not
the shelters themselves, but portable heaters that are specially made
for use in temporary shelter housing. They seem to do a fair amount
of work for the military...is this company in the realm of
possibility?

As I mentioned earlier, there are lists that include several hundred
Aspen-like companies that may or may not include the one you're after.
Perhaps if you were to scan some of these lists yourself, something
might ring a bell.

I'd be glad to provide an answer that shows you how to search various
databases that specialize in information about contracts and/or
contractors, and create lists of the companies that meet your specific
criteria (e.g. Aspen or Aspin in the name, doing construction/housing
work, contracting for the Army, or whatever...)

Let me know if that sort of information would be of interest to you as
an answer to your question.

Thanks.

I appreciate your research, but have managed to identify the company
independently. Please release the question and I'll cancel. Thanks -
