What percentages of men and women maturbate through specific ages over time (esp. something like: men age 10-15= 18%, 16-18= 21%, 19-21= 22%, 22-25= 23%, 26-30= 24%, 31-35= 21%, 36-41= 17%,42-47= 14%, 48-53= 11%, 54-59= 8%, 60-65=6%, 66-71= 3%, 72-77= 1%, 78-on= 1%; woman ages: 10-15= 13%, 16-18= 11%, 19-21= 15%, 22-25= 19%, 26-30= 23%, 31-35= 20%, 36-41= 16%,42-47= 13%, 48-53= 9%, 54-59= 7%, 60-65= 4%, 66-71= 2%, 72-77= 1%, 78-on= 1% ---something where it would seperate men from women and give percentages at different ages during one's life? The natural assumptions are young men do it more often and at a greater percentage, as does one assume that over time, both sexes do it less and less. There is a reasonable expectation that females start a little later than males but females may catch up or surpass males around their thirties then begin to drop off again after about 55 again? I would like to see either a graph of this or a grouping something like I suggested. Thanks! |

Hi 4sure, Statistics similar to those which you are seeking have been collected and published in a book "Sex in America: A Definitive Survey" by Robert T Michael, J Gagnon and others. Here's the listing at amazon.com: "Books: Sex in America" http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0446671835 If you have registered with amazon.com and logged in, and have a valid credit card on file, you can search and browse within the text of this book (the credit card is not charged). If you search for the phrase "masturbation by age and gender", then click on the hyperlink that reads "on Page 164", you will be taken to a chart showing the frequency of masturbation by age and gender for ages 18 to 59, broken down into "once a week or more", "sometimes" or "not at all". The authors did not interview people under 18, but they note that "previous studies by others have found that most adolescent boys masturbate". Contrary to your expectations, there is a relatively low rate from age 18-24: just 60% of men and fewer than 40% of women said that they had masturbated in the past year. The authors propose that this is because at that age they regard masturbation as something "that kids do ... that they have now outgrown". However, by their late twenties both men and women are masturbating more, and in general the frequency of masturbation is correlated with the frequency of sex for each age group. The authors draw the interesting conclusion that "masturbation is not a substitute for those who are sexually deprived, but rather is an activity that stimulates and is stimulated by other sexual behavior". This book does support your assumption that females start masturbating later, although they never overtake males. Females also peak later (age 34-39 for females vs. age 24-29 for males). The book also notes that those most likely to engage in oral sex (such as white educated liberals) are also those most likely to masturbate. Surprisingly, married people were significantly more likely to masturbate than those living alone. I recommend that you browse online pages 163, 164 and 165, especially the graph on page 164 which provides data of the type that you are seeking. If you want to purchase the book, it is available from amazon.com for $18, with used copies currently listed from $7. Another source of statistics is provided by the Kama Sutra Cross-Tab Sex Survey 2002: http://www.ksontheweb.com/64/KSCT2003website.pps This file is in Microsoft Powerpoint 97 format, and is best viewed with Powerpoint (or OpenOffice.org's free "Impress" software) as Google's HTML view does not show the charts. Unlike the statistics for "Sex in America", the Kama Sutra Cross-Tab Sex Survey is from India and show a different pattern: married people were less likely to masturbate than those living alone. The Indian statistics are for males only, and masturbation rates were 64% for age 18-24, 61% for age 25-30, 53% for age 31-35 and 48% above age 35. There are many more statistics in the Kama Sutra Cross-Tab Sex Survey. I hope that from these two studies you can gain the information that you are seeking.
