Question ID: 328697
What Progress IS being made in discovering and proving a ?Theory of
Everything?; that is, in uniting the QED forces and Gravity.

I am a layman; however with a genius IQ and other then a lifelong
propensity for Science and Technology; I was evaluated at 40 as a
perfect Generalist to run a company as its CEO. That has come to
pass. I mention this before stating a problem, easily overcome, for
you as a researcher. Namel6y, I never went further in Math than Basic
Calculus, because I was never explained the underlying beautiful
foundations that can be so well stated without Symbols Thus, I would
like this and future answers to be deep and even eclectic as you see
fit. The first question I posted was answered in this manner, but I
write the above because I have not posted any comments yet - Quantum
Mechanics implications on latest research on Consciousness and
perception of what we call 1 reality.

I became interested in depth in relativity, Quantum Mechanics and
Cosmology and, of course as I read books by Davies as an example, I
naturally have kept interested on the search for a Grand Unification
Theory of Everything. One that finally unites the present Unification
theory (QED) which predicted so much that came to be verified. And
when you through Quantum theory into the mix, we find that Gravity,
and thus, Einstein's General Relativity, although completely verified
and successfully predictive (black hole, etc.); it has not been able
to be brought into the fold of forces of QED.

I would like to know the present state of all theoretical avenues that
have and mostly are now being traveled down in an effort to unite
Gravity by showing it to be just another manifestation of one
underlying force of "nature". I have been not been keeping up with the
progress of different theories for the 12 years it took for me to
establish my new company. But I Remember theories such as Superstring,
parallel universes, the marvelous explanation potential of "Inflation"
and the Higgs Boson pointing perhaps to a lack of sufficient energies
to produce missing links in transitory particles that only existed at
the Big Bang, i.e. earlier than the manifestation of all QED forces as
being the same at the high levels accelerators had reached in the
1980's. And lastly, I remember the beginnings of success with Quantum
Gravity theories and the search for "gravitons" as a particle to
search for and, in so doing, uncover others.

In summary, I would like to know the how well these and other theories
are doing in a search for a "Theory of Everything" by old and new
theories and especially cutting edge theories that may not hold any
mathematical, much less experimental limited forms of verification;
but that these theories feel intuitively by the top theoretical
Physicists to point in the right direction but may or may not be
stalled in finding methods of even the least verification. I am
inclined to like the problem and potential solutions to have some
exhibitive component that we call "thought Experiments", such as those
of Einstein that were highly successfully predictive of future proofs
of theories that explain the unexplainable of that time because it
felt intuitively correct and all that was lacking was the scientific
and often mathematical progress to provide researchers with the
ability to devise and carry-out verification experiments.

I am just as interested in these sometimes seemingly far-fetched
theoretical solutions or even sub-solutions, such as verbal but no
mathematical progress in something like the implications of the
verification of Bell's theorem by Aspect and the implications of the
fact that all parts of the universe are linked on some undetectable
level, proven by the fact that information is instantaneously
available between 2 formerly linked, say, particles. So, if one
accepts the origin of our perceived universe to be the Big Bang, then
everything was once linked together before, say, Inflation. what is
the latest thinking thus lastly in this area as follows for
alternative Theories of Everything i.e. the latest thinking on the
role that consciousness may play in finally uniting gravity and QED
and as an aside - what is all that 80 to 90 % of brain potential used
for, what is going on with all the inactive parts of the human Genome.
Does this and black hole paradox resolution implications may also have
contributed to theories in say my 15 year absence from the literature.

Lastly, I am very familiar with search engines, but I am inundated
with publications and websites. I need you to point me in the right
direction by highlighting the best received explanations, theories and
just plain good ideas. I naturally have least ability to access or
pursue information in Academic and government research journals.

Just point me in the right directions to discover what the best
respected minds are thinking and throw in a fair amount on the Quantum
Gravity and the rise of consciousness in the universe and what its
appearance might be telling us about how everything fits together on
another level and lastly update me on the present state of the various
theories and, by the way; which one is the most generally accepted at
present to be pointing in the best direction for mathematically
complete formulation of the theory and the relative present scientific
complexity and technological ability for us to perform experiments
that would lead to proof or dropping it or just leaving it in abeyance
until we can even formulate a proof method.

One last item. Have any thinkers come up with a theory based on
explaining everything by positing that bringing gravity into the
unified theory is not the end, but that we are missing a force (or
alternatively a form of matter ? perhaps sub-Quark) that is needed to
complete unification; for example ? wildly I posit that Consciousness
and Quantum Weirdness is all attributable to a new force that let?s
say provides us with the means and ability to make ESP and other
aspects of the paranormal to be rather totally normal, and somewhere
is a force that when activated by our unused brain and Genome,
completely transforms our unification ideas as well as the nature of
what the Universe is that contains these forces and particles.,

To aid you in understanding the overall nature of my personal research
interests in Theoretical Physics, please glance at my first Google
question as they are obviously intimately related and you will
probably have a 3rd question soon to dig deeply into a particular
path.

Clarification of Question by chadbourne-ga on 12 Apr 2004 10:09 PDT
The lengthy discourse provided below was meant to provide the
Researcher with information on my knowledge level mainly to avoid
duplicatio and to help set a level of complexity and a possible list
of areas to research that were in play 10 years ago. At the end, I
just added a conjecture thati have been exploring, and was added to
see if there was any litterature in the direction of Quantum Gravity
and Quantum Cosciosness that might pertain to the Topic that I wanted
researched.

In sum, I am looking for the latest research - academic journals &
Labs such as CERN - on the various directions of theoretical pursuit
and mathematical formulation and statement of a theoory so that
experiments can be formulated to make progress on verification or
re-channel that avenue of pursuit.

The main theories that I am looking for information on are involved in
the latest developments that may help in the pursuit of a "Grand
Unified Theory" such as Superstring Theory, Quantum Gravity, the
multi-brancing parallel universe theory, the develpments in better
understanding the possibilities by applying higher and higher energy
levels in new accelarators to re-create conditions ans thus particles
that existed just after the big bang. In other words, "Quantum Electro
- Dynamic" Theory that was able to unite all known natural forces
except Gravity into a theory that was successfully predictive of new
particles and their relationships and was verified by the exterimental
productrion of all predicted particles in the remanants of collisions
in bigger accelarators.

So, my short question is: What progress has been made in explaining
gravity in relation to the present best GUT that is called QED as
above. I just want latest research toward the unification of
explaining graviity as QED explains electro-magnetism, the strong and
the weak force as being different aspects of the same singular force,
but at different energy levels.

What progress has been made on a GUT post QED Theory verification,
especially in the past 10 to 15 years.

Clarification of Question by chadbourne-ga on 12 Apr 2004 15:24 PDT
My original question was perhaps too long and perhaps intimidated your
researchers even at $100. So I havr rewritten the question in a
clarification and specified Physics as the sub-topic. Could a
supervisor please resubmit the question, referring to the new short
clarification. At $1200, I would hope that a researcher with a
layman's grasp of theoretical Physics should have no problem
researching the most important problem in this area of science. The
researcher that handled my question on Quantum Consciousness would
have no problem eith work on a Grand Unified Theory of "Everything".
Tell your researchers to use the first question as background info. to
be used as he feels to need it. The clarification is thus now a
simpler and more specific form of my original overly comprehensive
question.

Yours Truly,

Chad Downs

As a counterbalance to your complicated question, even if it was put a
bit " tongue in cheek". From the bible...First Corinthians
1;26-31...For you behold His calling of you brothers, that not many
wise in a fleshly way were called, not many powerful, not many of
noble birth. 27. But God chose the foolish things of the world, that
he might put the wise men to shame; and God chose the weak things of
the world that He might put the strong things to shame.28. And God
chose the ignoble things of the world and the things looked down upon,
the things that are not, that He might bring to nothing the things
that are.29. IN ORDER THAT NO FLESH MIGHT BOAST IN THE SIGHT OF
GOD......
???Might this be called " Fair Warning????"

Very loquacious question, which has resulted in diminution of
comprehension in order to ascertain the epiphany you are soliciting.

This website could possibly be countenance to your quest, as it
elucidates the state of affairs in approximately 2003 as to a Grand
Unifying Theory. It has a certain verisimilitude I find to be
amenable.
