Some years ago I saw on "Yahoo/new" a British (?) company which sold
(expensive) magnetic levitating globes. I cannot find the firm any
longer. As I recall they sold Replogle Globes which were magnetically
levitated. Today there are zillions of cheap knock-offs, using plastic
globes. Even those by Levitron are not very good. I know about
Redcliffe, Ltd, and JustinWood.co.UK (which evidently does not ship to
the U.S.)

Can you help me find the source--or any source of high-quality, large
diameter (8-inch or so) mag-lev globes?

Thanks.

Greetings Z9m9z:

A tough find indeed. I've found a few possibilities for you but I'm
not certain if you've seen these (or if you'll fancy them) so I'll
refrain from posting this information as an answer until you are
satisfied with my results. I didn't include the ones that I could
ascertain were Levitron or any from the companies you mentioned in
your question.

I first found a reference at
http://www.geocities.com/dsligar.geo/globe.html for a high-end
levitating globe and the text said it was purchased at the St. Louis
Science Museum for $170. It also states that the globe is made by
Replogle Globes, Inc. and licensed by Pacific levitation Systems, Inc
in Vancouver, Canada. I did a bit of searching down those paths and
ReploGlobe only made the actual globe (I phoned them to confirm this).
I then phoned the St. Louis Science Center to see if they still sold
these and spoke to the gift shop. They don't have those anymore.

Pacific Levitation Systems, Inc. doesn't seem to have a web presence
but I located their contact information:
Pacific Levitation Systems Inc.
705 15th St W
North Vancouver, BC
PHONE:(604) 988-7890
and this contact info:
1433 Pemberton Avenue
North Vancouver, BC V7P2R8
(604)988-7890 or (604)988-1122
Calling Canada will add more cost to my search me so I will leave this
phone call for you. This may be the best source for the high-end
globe IF they still manufacture the product.

Other possibilities include (some are smaller globes than 8"):

From C.C. Goods

Stellanova Levitating Globe
http://www.bitwisegifts.com/page/bg/PROD/19000/19007

This "Executive Levitating Globe" is out-of-stock at present. Looks
like it might be a Levitron but I wasn't certain so I'm including it
anyway.
http://www.physlink.com/estore/cart/ExecutiveLevitatingGlobe.cfm

This looks like the same one as above but has a couple of the Stellnova globes, too

Again, not sure if this is Levitron

More of the same....

More of the same at Ebay...

Also, here are the search results from Froogle (ranked Highest price
to Lowest price):
http://froogle.google.com/froogle?hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&tab=wf&q=magnetic+levitating+globe&scoring=pd
and "floating globe" results are at
://www.google.com/froogle?q=%22floating+globe%22&scoring=pd

I tried. Hope I helped a bit. Let me know if Pacific Levitation
Systems has the globe you seek.

Best regards,
journalist-ga
