Dear tmeek

Thanks very much for your question. According to David Mackenzie, the
director of the film based on the novel, the Adam referred to is the
Adam of the Bible. In a Washington Post online discussion, Mackenzie
said:

"There is no character in the film called Adam. It probably refers to
a biblical fall from grace ..."

Tilda Swinton, one of the stars in the film, added: "... an exile from
Eden. The Chinese translation of the title is 'The River Remembers
Lost Loves.' "

The full transcript of the discussion is at "Young Adam (washingtonpost.com)":

Please note you may have to register to see the transcript
(registration is free and quick).

In a 'making of' documentary that accompanies the DVD version of the
film, Ewan McGregor, another of the film's stars, says that he thought
"Trocchi called the book 'Young Adam' out of sheer bloody-mindedness
so that everyone would have to ask who Adam was." Another hypothesis
suggested here is that Adam was probably Cathie's unborn child. This
information is taken from a review of the DVD extras, at "Channel 4
Film - Young Adam film review...":

I hope this answers your question. If you require further help, please
don't hesitate to ask for a question clarification.

Kind regards
