Question ID: 329237
I have an HP Pavilion N3310 Laptop computer. I use it as a secondary
computer, to take outside on the porch, etc... In any case, it came
time that I wanted to reformat the hard drive and reinstall my
software. I did that and everything went fine. However, for some
reason, the screen resolution is only set to 640x480 and it only uses
16 colors. Sufficed to say, the picture looks horrible. I have used
this computer for years, and I know that I never had this problem
before. The kicker is that I can't change any of it. I have
obviously gone into the display settings, but it won't change the
resolution. The only other option it gives me for # of colors is 2!
I have tried to update the driver, but it says that the best one is
already loaded. I have a hard time believing this, because it always
worked fin before. So, does anybody know what is going on and how to
fix it? (FYI- the computer is running Windows 98 SE). Thanks!

tnsdan-ga:

From the description of the symptoms that you have provided, it
appears that the current installation of Windows 98SE on your laptop
sees your graphics chip as being only a VGA-compatible device. This is
the default graphics adapter setting for Windows 98SE, and limits you
to the resolution and color depth that you mentioned. When you attempt
to update the driver, Windows 98SE will look for an updated VGA
driver, which naturally it will not find.

You will need to install the driver for the actual graphics adapter in
your HP Pavilion N3310, which is the Trident CyberBlade i7 AGP
adapter. This driver may already be available to you on a support disk
included with your computer; you can also download it from
DriverGuide.com (free registration required):

http://members.driverguide.com/driver/detail.php?driverid=55324

After you download and extract the files in the ZIP file (making sure
you 'use folder names' in WinZIP, or the equivalent in some other ZIP
file utility, to recreate the original folder structure), you can run
the SETUP.EXE program contained in the extracted folders to install
the video driver onto your system, and update the driver used by
Win98SE.

Please let me know if you run into any problems while doing this, I
can help you through the process.
