A new product called the Drink Detective ( www.drinkdetective.com ) is designed to detect whether "date rape" drugs such as Rohypnol, GHB, or ketamine have been slipped into drinks, the BBC reported April 6. The sodium and potassium salts of 4-hydroxybutyric acid (sodium/potassium oxybate) have formerly been used as anesthetics and in treatment of narcolepsy. Prior to 1990 it was sold OTC as a sleeping aid and muscle relaxant in the USA; it is now marketed as a sleeping aid under the name Xyrem. It is used in high doses, and has a strong salty-soapy taste; so a "spiked" drink will be quite easy to recognise. It is not included in the standard drug tests, and can only be detected for a short time (24h) after consumation. It is potentiated by alcohol, and may cause "blackouts". http://www.erowid.org/chemicals/ghb/ghb_testing.shtml http://www.recovery.org.uk/druginfo/ghb.html http://www.ceri.com/report.htm http://xyrem.info/ Rohypnol is a brandname for the chemical Flunitrazepam. It is a prescription hypnotic in Europe; it is sceduled by the DEA and not marketed in the US. It is chemically related to Diazepam (Valium), but around ten times stronger. It is tasteless and and colorless, so the manufacturer (Roche) have started adding blue dye to the tablets to stop them being used as a date rape drug. This drug is also potentiated by alcohol, and may cause "blackouts". Rohypnol belongs to a group of chemicals called benzodiazepines, and they tested for in all standard drug tests. http://www.usdoj.gov/dea/pubs/rohypnol/rohypnol.htm http://www.coolnurse.com/date_rape.htm :-) As2O3 |
