Do you know where I can get a listing of the name and addresses of the
the 50 or so, largest (in terms of total assets) co-operative mutual
banks in the USA?
Thank you.

The FDIC lists 21 banks covered by FDIC insurance that include
"Mutual" in their name.

Would this type of list (which can be ranked by assets) meet your
needs, or do you have reason to believe that there are actually more
than 21 Mutual banks in the US?

Also, is there a distinction between a "mutual bank" and a
"co-operative mutual bank" -- I'm not familiar with the latter phrase.

I recently participated in an IPO (Initial Public Offering) for the
New Haven Savings bank that went public under the name NewAlliance
Bancshares (Nasdaq: NABC). I was able to participate in the IPO
because I had a savings account at the bank 3 years ago.

The prospectus used the words: "The New Haven Savings Bank, New Haven,
CT is converting from the mutal to stock form of organization."

So I am looking to make deposits in other USA, "mutual" banks that
may, eventually to public.

I believe there are a lot more than 21 banks like this in America.
Many many not have the word "mutual" in there name, since New Haven
Savings Bank did not. I am interested in the 50 or so largest since I
believe they have the best chance to go public and give depositors the
ability to participate in another new IPO.

Sounds like a good plan, but it's turning out to be tougher than I
anticipated to zero in on the banks you're looking for. Here are two
links worth checking out, though:

http://www2.fdic.gov/idasp/main.asp

Near the top of the page, click on "Find All" (hard to find -- white
type against dark blue background), then in the search box you get,
enter "mutual" in the "institution name" field, and click on "find".
You'll get a list of banks sorted by asset size -- note the list is
"tabbed" and by clicking on different tabs, you get different subsets
of institutions (that's why I only found 21 at first -- I didn't
notice the tabs).

Secondly, go to:

http://132.200.33.161/nicSearch/servlet/NICServlet?$GRP$=INSTSEARCH&REQ=DOM&MODE=SEARCH

enter "mutual" in the search box, and click on "anywhere in name"

This will return a similar list (it includes some non-banks...e.g.
life insurance companies) and you can get additional info on any bank
by clicking on its name.

Not exactly a nice clean "Top 50" list, but I hope this is of some use to you.

Good luck.
