Carrier Corporation (a division of UTC) has 28 separate manufacturing
facilities in the US, according to the company description on this job
posting:
--------------------------------
http://www.mepatwork.com/company_profiles/display_profile/1000000525
"Carrier manufactures, sells and services 50 brands in residential,
commercial, refrigeration and transportation markets. The Company has
80 manufacturing facilities around the world, including 28 in the
United States, with a worldwide network of owned and independent
distributors and dealers in more than 172 countries on six continents.
In North America alone, Carrier has over 200 distributors and 20,000
dealers."
--------------------------------
However, as you've probably guessed, not all of these facilities are
involved in the manufacture of air conditioners. Unfortunately, the
Carrier website does not provide us with any insight into where any of
these facilities (other than the corporate headquarters in Syracuse,
NY) are located. For that, we must turn to other sources.
In this article, we hear about several of the facilities in
conjunction with the announced closing of one of the facilities in
2005:
--------------------------------
http://www.bizjournals.com/nashville/stories/2004/02/02/daily10.html?jst=s_cn_hl
"Carrier Corp. will close its McMinnville manufacturing facility by
the second half of 2005.
The decision is a result of the company's collective bargaining
obligations. The plant makes a broad range of commercial air
conditioners and ventilation products. Under the collective bargaining
plan, production will be relocated to some of the company's other
factories, including Carrier plants in Tyler, Texas; Charlotte, N.C.;
and Monterrey, Mexico. An estimated 1,300 jobs will be affected by the
decision."
--------------------------------
This still doesn't provide conclusive information about the air
conditioner manufacturing facilities. We can then turn to the
Environmental Protection Agency, which has a vested interest in the
type of work that goes on at Carrier factories. In their 2002 review
of manufacturing sites for 'large appliances' that would be affected
by then-proposed rules for coating applications, the EPA compiled the
following list:
Large Appliance Sources by State
http://www.epa.gov/ttn/atw/lapp/lasource.pdf
In this list, the following Carrier facilities are identified:
Carrier Corp.
Tyler Refrigeration Corp.
Niles Case Plant
1329 Lake St.
Niles MI 49120
- this appears to be only a factory for the air conditioner casings
Carrier Corporation
Carrier Parkway
Syracuse NY 13221
Carrier Corporation McMinnville
284 Carrier Drive
Morrison TN 37357
Carrier Corporation
97 South Ryhalia
Collierville TN 38017
Carrier Corp.
Tyler Refrigeration Corp.
Waxahachie Case Plant
824 Circle Dr.
Waxahachie TX 75165
- this also appears to be only a factory for the air conditioner casings
Carrier Corporation
1700 E. Duncan
Tyler TX 75702
To validate this list, we can turn to the website of one of the brands
that Carrier owns: Bryant. Bryant's air conditioners are most likely
manufactured in the same facilities as other Carrier branded air
conditioning units. Their website contains the following list of
locations:
http://www.bryant.com/home/about/default.asp
"Bryant?s manufacturing sites are spread across the U.S. and include
some of the largest heating and cooling production facilities in the
world. They also incorporate advanced technology, to maintain the
highest standards possible in the design, production and quality
testing of heating and cooling equipment.
(1) Indianapolis, Indiana
Also the site of Bryant headquarters for the Residential/Light
Commercial division, the 600,000-square-foot facility is the highest
volume furnace plant in the world.
(2) Huntington, Indiana
The world-class United Technologies Electronic Controls facility
manufactures thermostats, zoning and other electronic controls for
Bryant equipment.
(3) Syracuse, New York
In-house reliability testing for residential products occupies more
than 14,400 square feet in Syracuse.
(4) McMinnville, Tennessee
The largest commercial air conditioning plant in the world, the
McMinnville facility manufactures Bryant large rooftop units and split
systems.
(5) Collierville, Tennessee
Bryant condensing units are manufactured by the 1,400 employees at the
Collierville plant, the largest producer of residential condensing
units in the U.S.
(6) Arkadelphia, Arkansas
Featuring environmentally friendly processes, the Arkadelphia plant
produces the state-of-the art millennium scroll compressor for Bryant
condensing units.
(7) Tyler, Texas
The 500,000-square-foot Tyler plant manufactures Bryant small
rooftops, condensing units and packaged products."
From this list, the McMinnville, Collierville, and Tyler facilities
appear to be the only ones actually manufacturing the completed air
conditioning units, while the other locations either manufacture
Bryant's furnace products, or controls products.
When the McMinnville facility shuts down in 2005, a portion of its
production will be transferred to a Carrier facility in Charlotte NC;
a quick search in Google reveals this:

This is Carrier's newest air conditioner manufacturing facility, open since 1999.
