Greetings!
I was able to find statistics from 1999 and 2000 on the number of
officers in the New York City Police Department (NYPD).
The Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS) conducts the Law Enforcement
Management and Administrative Statistics (LEMAS) every 3 to 4 years.
The current LEMAS datasets on the BJS web site are from 1999. In 1999
the NYPD had a total of 51,348 employees. Of these 39,099 were sworn
officers and 12,249 were civilian.

BJS has also recently published "Police Departments in Large Cities,
1990-2000." Appendix A of this publication shows that in 2000 the NYPD
had a total of 53,029 employees. Of these 40,435 were full-time, sworn
personnel. The appendix is available in the .pdf version of the
document, not in the ASCII text version.

Search Strategy:
I was aware of BJS and LEMAS already, so I first visited the main BJS
page and followed the link for "Statistics about - Law Enforcement -
State & Local"
In search of more recent statistics, I visited the NCJRS site and
followed the link for Statistics and the subcategory of Law
Enforcement.
I also searched the NCJRS abstracts database for the subject terms
"police statistics" and "police personnel." This search did not
retrieve anything newer than what I had previously found.
