I've located some good annual figures for the U.S. (it'd be possible
to figure a daily rate by dividing).

Statistics for the "around the world" are somewhat harder to come by.
Would you settle for the U.S. figure?

Hello.

According to a projection on the web site of the U.S. Department of
Transportation, a total of approximately 9.3 billion directory
assistance (411) calls will be made this year in the U.S.
See:
Table 2 - U.S. Directory Assistance Call Volumes 2000 - 2005,
http://www.its.dot.gov/511/511_Costs.htm#Table2

That figure implies a daily 411 call rate of about 25.5 million in the U.S.

----------

I actually was able to locate a worldwide figure.

According to a Zelos Group report, the worldwide directory assistance
total in 2003 was 48 billion calls. This year would likely be higher
as Zelos predicts an 11.8% compound annual growth rate.

Forecast, July 2003, cached by Google:

Thus, if you suppose a 2004 annual rate of 53 billion, that would
imply a worldwide directory assistance call rate of about 145 million
calls per day.

---------
search strategy:
"u.s." "directory assistance" "billion calls"
"directory assistance" worldwide "billion calls"

I hope this helps.
