Months ago I read a S.F. Chronicle article about how to delete some
annoying thing on your computer, I don't remember what(popups?). My
problem is ever since then when I turn on my computer it starts to
install Windows XP Office but stops for some reason after 15 seconds
(I have and want XP Home). How do I get this annoying process to stop?

Hi wdp-ga,

As you suggest in your question there is more than one version of
Microsoft Windows XP, but Office is not one of them. Microsoft Office
XP is an application not an operating system.

What I'm guessing from your question is that you're running Microsoft
Windows XP Home and at some point someone has installed Microsoft
Office XP with default settings. These default settings include
installing many components of the software immediately and setting
other components to install on their first use.

What has possibly happened is that you are now trying to use one of
these components and the dialog box that you see is asking for the
Microsoft Office XP CD so that it can install what is now required.
Simply put the Microsoft Office XP CD into your machine and click OK.

Please let me know if this solves your problem, or if my assumptions are incorrect.

start -> run -> msconfig
Click on startup tab and find the process that is initiating the
install. Uncheck it.

also, try running adaware and spy bot search and destroy.. you can
find them both fairly easily via google.
