I am looking for information about the murder of a friend's
grandfather in Cairo IL. My friend is 86 years old and cannot see.
So I am doing the work for her. The grandfather owned a grocery store
(general store) in Cairo. The family name is Zimmerman (I do not have the
first name). The wife/widow was left with three girls and one boy.
The boy is my friend's father. We have searched ancestry.com for
information about the father unsuccessfully. The 1880 census lists
the family sans father in Cairo IL. The children's names (in order by
age, oldest to
youngest) are: Lena, Mary, Sarah, and Louis. All were born in
Hungary. They had been in the United States no more than one or two
years. The widow retained the property and it was willed to Mary
Zimmerman who by then lived in Chicago IL. We are looking for the
burial place of Mr. Zimmerman, as well as a contemporaneous account of
the death. The person who killed him was a "Negro". This may have
occurred during the riots that occurred in Cairo in the late 1870's.
Someone who could go to the Cairo IL library would probably be able to
find this information quite easily. We do not live near IL>
