Dear alphahayen,

Since there are countless German lullabies, it would be really helpful
if you could provide any additional information on the particular
recording you have in mind.

Scriptor

The song you are seeking is commonly called "Brahms Lullaby" or
"Cradle Song" or "Lullaby and Goodnight." Its real title is
"Wiegenlied, Opus 49, No. 4" by Johannes Brahms.

It was written for voice and piano and has been recorded many times.
Below is a link to a brief audio clip of one particularly famous and
beautiful version by Anne Sofie von Otter (voice) and Bengt Forsberg
(piano). It is Track 22 on a Deutsche Grammaphon CD entitled simply
"Brahms: Lieder" and is available online from several sources. I have
linked you to the Tower Records site because an audio clip is
available there. Just click on track 22, and if you have Real Audio
or Windows Media, you can hear the clip:
Tower Records: Brahms Lieder
http://www.towerrecords.com/product.aspx?pfid=1074373

If this is the versiion you are seeking or if this one will suffice, I
will post an answer that includes the lyrics in the original German.

I am sorry I didn't get back to you sooner, but I had to leave my
"post" for a while. I am pleased that I have found your song. As
promised, I am supplementing my clarification request with the German
and English lyrics to Brahms Lullaby, and I will also give you several
options for obtaining the sheet music, both in a voice/piano version
and in a piano solo version.

First, the lyrics:

(Original German Lyrics)
Guten Abend, gut' Nacht, Mit Rosen bedacht,
Mit Naglein besteckt schlaf unter die Deck!
Morgen Fruh wenn Got will, wirst du wieder geweckt,
Morgen Fruh, wenn Got will, wirst du wieder geweckt,

Guten Abend, gut' nacht! Von Englein bewacht,
Die zeigen in Traum, dir Christkindlein's baum.
Schlaf' num selig und suss, schau' in Traum's Paradies,
Schlaf' num selig und suss, schau' in Traum's Paradies.

(Literal translation from the German)
Good evening, good night, covered with roses,
With tiny fingernails hidden, slipping under the blankets,
Tomorrow morning, if God wills, you will wake again.
Tomorrow morning, if God wills, you will wake again.

God evening, good night, watched over by tiny angels,
Who show the little Christ Child's tree in dreams,
Sleep now, blessed and sweet, look at dream's paradise.
Sleep now, blessed and sweet, look at dream's paradise.

(One of many variants of the English version as sung)
Lullaby and good night, with roses bestride,
With lilies bedecked. 'neath Baby's sweet bed.
May thou sleep, may thou rest, may thy slumber be blest.
May thou sleep, may thou rest, may thy slumber be blest.

Lullaby and good night, thy mother's delight.
Bright angels around, my darling, shall guard.
They will guide thee from harm, thou art safe in my arms.
They will guide thee from harm, thou art safe in my arms.

As I noted above, there are many variations of the lyrics of the
lullaby in English, and the one I have provided (from a Frank Sinatra
rendition) is typical. If you want to explore other English versions,
I suggest that you use the following simple Google search and peruse
the results:
"brahms lullaby" lyrics

As for the sheet music, there is also a wide choice, and I am offering
you several representative options:

First, here is a collection of Brahms songs (lieder) scored for voice
and piano and published by Dover, a preeminent publisher of classical
sheet music:
Dover Publications: Brahms: Complete Songs for Solo Voice and Piano, Series II
http://store.doverpublications.com/0486238210.html

Here is another collection that contains Wiegenlied -- this one in a
key suitable for low voice and piano:

If you prefer to buy sheet music for this song alone, it is available
here in a piano version:
Sheet Music Plus: Cradle Song: Opus 4, No. 4 (Wiegenlied)
http://www.sheetmusicplus.com/store/smp_detail.html?sku=HL.50280930&cart=32910358085327379&searchtitle=Sheet%20Music

Finally, here is a site where you can download (for a fee) a copy of
the sheet music in a fairly simple arrangement for piano solo:
Sheet Music Direct: Search Result (Fifth item on the page)
http://www.sheetmusicdirect.com/01new_browseabc.ihtml?Artist=Brahms%2c%20Johannes&abc=%25&start=21

I hope that this gives you sufficient information both as to the
lyrics and the sheet music options. If anything is unclear, please
ask for clarification before rating the answer.

You asked how you might direct questions to me in the future. To do
that, you can just include as part of the "Subject" of your question
something like "for markj-ga only," and that request will be
respected by other researchers. And thanks for asking.

I neglected to include my "search strategy" in the body of my answer,
so here it is.

I immediately recognized the song from your accurate representation of
it in do-re-mi terminology in your clarification. I then used some
Google searches to try to find an appropriate recording and then to
find lyrics and sheet music sources. These searches included the
following, among others:

wiegenlied brahms lyrics

brahms "op. 49"
