Question ID: 33077
Where can I find a piece of software that I can put onto my PC's that
montitors all data that is uploaded and dowloaded (not normal LAN
packets - only internet traffic) so that I can see how much internet
traffic (in KB not packets) I have accumilated over a period. This is
because my ISP includes 5GB a months of uploads and downloads and I
want to see if I use more. I have multiple PC's comming off of a
router that my DSL is plugged into.

Hey whizzzz-ga,

You should be able to use your hosting account's customer usage
statistics to monitor your monthly data transfer totals on a daily
basis. Is this info not being provided?

There is software available to perform this function. Here's a piece
of shareware called DU Meter that goes for $20.

http://www.rosecitysoftware.com/DUMeter/

You might try Magitime, "a user-friendly connection tracking utility
[that] monitors online time, expense, data transfer," linked to on
this page:

http://www.nonags.com/nonags/dun.html

but apparently not available at the moment.

OK, these guys have Magitime too:

http://www.webattack.com/Freeware/comm/fwtimer.shtml

Most of the freeware I'm finding in my search only monitors the time
of dial-up connections, not data transfer totals. It looks like you
might have more luck with inexpensive shareware.

Here's an excerpt you might find useful:

"Should I use the Urchin, Analog or MKStats statistics packages to
determine my data transfer totals?
No. Although those statistics packages offer some data transfer
monitoring, they are all limited to monitoring only "http" traffic.
Thus, while very useful for determining web site "hits," they do not
provide a full accounting of your data transfer totals. For example,
those statistics programs do not monitor data transfers resulting from
FTP downloads." from

http://www.latemodel.com/appleget/data_trasfer.html

I searched on terms like:

data transfer KB monitor freeware

Hope this helps ya keep track of things! :-)

Hi,

Just to add some software I found.

It is called NetUp. There is a brief description on the University of
Toronto web site,

University of Toronto (NetUp)
http://www.utoronto.ca/ucres/netup.htm

It is downloadable from download.com (http://www.download.com).

Download.com (NetUp download)
http://download.com.com/3120-20-0.html?qt=NetUp&tg=dl-2001&search=+Go%21+

Although it is not quite free the current version (1.3) can be bought
for a nominal sum.
