Hi,
The best way to get a "higher" listing on a search engine is to read
the FAQ's on how to do that for each of the search engines. We are
talking about non-pay-for-status search engines. The others, you throw
money at them and hope you win.
The FAQ's for Google's search listings are here:
Information for Webmasters

Other search engines have similar pages instructing how to post and
what they look for on your page.
There are many services which tout that they can get you a better
listing, and these sometimes help, but many of them hurt. They use
tactics which may get you up there in short run and then "ban" you
from the same engine in a month or so. Some of these tactics include
"spamming your meta tags" and using words on the webpage which are the
same color as the background.
Popularity of a search which matches your website is very helpful.
Give more than one reason for someone to come to your page. For
instance, offered classes and information in the area of your
website's main theme will get traffic to your site, and improve your
rating. Take a good look at BarnesandNoble.com and Amazon.com and see
how much is selling and how much is simply "interesting information".
Be very cautious regarding any "quick" fix idea someone presents to
you. The harm these can do to your site is sometimes very sever.
Do a search on Google for your website, using queries that you believe
should bring it up as an option, then look at the webpages above you.
Look at the meta tags they use and the relevance of the tags vs.. what
was on the front page.
Use a robots.txt file on your site in the main area. Many search
engines will not index a site unless this file exists. For information
on this file you can go here :
Robots.txt syntax checker

The Web Robots Pages

This file also helps keep your site from being indexed in certain
directories. That is also important.
Thanks for the question and if you need clarification please don't
hesitate to ask.
