Hi stephenh,
The following is all I was able to find.

Gum Tree
511 10th Street, NW
There's no gum allowed in Ford's Theatre, so hundreds of visitors have
stuck their chewed up wads on an unfortunate elm outside the theatre.
As colorful as it is icky, the gum tree is certainly worth marveling
at in person.

Washington, DC - Ford Theatre Gum Tree
You too can feed the tree. Hundreds of passersby have left their chew
on the trunk of an actual gum tree across the street from Ford?s
Theater where Lincoln was assassinated. Maybe they want their mouths
empty to savor the $3 lukewarm bottled water the guy sells whose cart
is chained to the trunk. Don?t lean against this tree. [K. Ward,

13. Gum Tree, outside Ford's Theatre, 511 10th St., NW. The school
kids can't bring their gum into Ford's Theatre, so hundreds of them
have stuck it on this unfortunate city elm. Whether folk art or just a
monument to the triumph of the cud-chewing consumer over nature, this
tourist's gift to DC is as nauseatingly colorful as an explosion in a
candy factory.
