Question ID: 331392
I am looking for a Pocket PC add-in or browser that will allow me to
run Java applications on an iPaq 2215 running Pocket PC 2003. I have
downloaded esmertec's Jeode Java Virtual Machine from Handango, but
apparently this does not support "Javascripts" (not sure what the
difference is between simple Java and a Javascript).

I have also downloaded NetFront v3.1 for Pocket PC 2003, which
supposedly supports Java as well, but I'm not able to run the
web-based application that I am trying to run (Oanda's FXTrader, at
www.oanda.com).

Am I missing something with the settings for either of these or,
alternatively, are there any other applications that may allow me to
do this?

A test application for Oanda can be found on https://fx2.oanda.com/test.html

I wrote to NetFront and asked them to check it out, and they replied that:

"The JV-Lite2 that is bundled in NetFront v3.1 for Pocket PC
does not support SSL certification so that the applet
in the https page cannot be opened."

Answer should point to software solution that either states that SSL
is supported on their webpage (as well as Java apps, of course), or
where researcher has checked with the company and they have said it
does.

Hi

===================
Some clarifications
====================
1. Are you using a version of Oanda's FXTrader that is meant
specifically for PocketPC 2003? (If it were specfically for PocketPC
2003, then they would have labelled the download as such)

2. Java is NOT the same as Javascript!! They are two totally different
technologies. In short, a Javascript application will not run in a
"Java Virtual Machine" and a Java application has different
requirements than a Javascript one.

3. I checked out the Oanda website. It appears that Oanda FXTrader is
a JAVA APPLET that is meant to run on "normal" computers - Desktop or
laptop computers.
         http://fxtrade.oanda.com/help/technical_requirements.shtml

Well what does this mean?
(A) If a software program is written as a JAVA APPLET, it is normally
usable using just any web browser that has a "Java Virtual Machine".
Think of the Java Virtual Machine as something like "Windows XP"
itself. It provides a lot of functionality for the applet to run.
Thats why it is a "Java Machine". It is running on Windows, which is a
"machine" itself :-). Hence it is a "Virtual Machine". Hence
combining, we get "Java Virtual Machine".

(B) Like i said, normally an applet should run on any web browser that
has the Java Virtial Machine. But there is no Java Virtual Machine for
Pocket Internet Explorer which is the browser on PocketPC 2003.

(C) Even if you were to get a custom browser like NetFront that
supprts a Java Virtual Machine, in my opinion, Oanda FXTrader will not
work properly on the PocketPC as it is engineered for bigger screen
sizes of desktop and laptop PC's. In fact, in their system
requirements page (previous link above), they define minimum screen
resolution as
                   640 by 480 pixel display (800x600 recommended)

==========================
What can you do
==========================
1. Call up Oanda customer service and ask them if there is a vrsion of
FXTrader for PocketPC operatin system

Thank you arun_jacob-ga for your comments.

I have written to Oanda to ask if they are planning to support a
Pocket PC platform.

In the meantime, I have also looked at their system requirements
(http://fxtrade.oanda.com/help/technical_requirements.shtml) and,
although they do recommend a minimum 640x480 display, they also
specify that "On a smaller screen you will not be able to view the
entire FXTrade Platform without scrolling", which would imply that the
platform would still work on a smaller screen, if you are willing to
put up with the scrolling (which I am), so the question still stands:
is there any way to make Oanda's Java Applet run on a Pocket PC using
either one of the software programs mentioned, or any others
publically available?
