Dear Boaz,

Could you please let us know more information on the circumstances of
the letetr and the information you already have. For example, are you
certain regarding the date? The publication in a Jewish periodical?
Why did he write this letter?

The student Gafanovich , my late uncle was
born in 1890. When he was a student he argued with his friends that there
was no contradiction in him being a socialist and a zionist at the same
time. He wrote to Tolstoi , whose opinion was accepted by the students and
the response was published in a jewish newspaper or periodical. In his
late years he spent time in the National Library in Jerusalem
searching the "letter" but
apparently he was too old and lacked the knowledge how to go about it.
The period was calculated by myself as he could not be younger than 15
probably 17-20 and Lev Tolstoi died in 1910.
Thank you
bet regards
