Question ID: 332310
What does a sound designer/sound editor typically earn in the Bay Area
with four years of professional, relevant experience? I don't want
to know what audio engineers make, generally speaking; I do want
specific information about salaries for sound editors, sound
designers, audio editors and audio speech editors, more specifically.
If there is any information about this type of work in conjunction with
product localization (changing something over to a different language),
that'd be great, too, but not as important.
Job duties: Create sound effects and edit and process speech for use in
toys, educational interactive products and multimedia devices.

I would like to get this information by the 25th of April, at the
latest, as I am going into a salary review/negotiation and need this
information by then. Thanks!

The correct answer to thise may depend on the industry that you would
be serving; film and movie, computer gaming, wedding dj...

According to the California for Marin County

Multi-Media Artists and Animators
Entry level: $20.98
Mean: $31.19
Mean Annual: $64,888

Sound Engineering Technicians
Entry level: $13.97
Mean hourly: $29.48
Mean Annual: $61,328

Media and Communication Equipment Workers, All Other
Entry level: $11.94
Mean hourly: $20.67
Mean Annual: $42,987

Mostly the information was found with a bit of digging through the
California government vital stats pages at
http://www.calmis.cahwnet.gov/file/occup$/oes$.htm

I read through the San Francisco MSA (Marin, San Francisco and San
Mateo Counties) chart, though the numbers will likely vary somewhat if
you're seeking employment in San Jose, Oakland, etc.

If you will potentially be working in a union environment in the
entertainment industry, try contacting the San Francisco IATSE local
784 at 415-861-8379 as they generally know exactly what their members
are demanding for salary.
