I use Windows ME. with Norton Virus Scan 2004. After a system
restore, I got the following: "NAV autoprotect. Unable to
initialise virus scanning database. Reboot"
I did a number of times. Still same problem. I then removed 2004
antivirus program but don't know how to reinstall it.

Hi tvans,

Do you have the CD, did you download Norton, or did it come pre-loaded
on your computer?

Thanks,
hummer

I downloaded Norton from its web page.

First perform a complete download of this product:
"Removing Norton Internet Security? or Norton Personal Firewall? 2004
from Windows 98/Me after Add/Remove Programs does not work"
This will let you a complete CLEAN reinstallation, do it even if
Add/Remove Programs worked.
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/nip.nsf/docid/2004021309280836?Open&src=&docid=2001092114452606&nsf=nav.nsf&view=docid&dtype=&prod=&ver=&osv=&osv_lvl=

After that run the file downloaded by you to reinstall it.

Please let me know how this works in ordoer to post this in the answer
box or to continue researching.
Thank you.

I did all the removal instructions asked and then tried to install the
antivirus program as advised. When I double clicked the navsetup.exe
on the computer, I got the following message:
"Navsetup.exe. missing the file instopts.dat. will exit."
Now what?

Thanks to your help, I now have Norton AntiVirus 2004 installed.
HOWEVER, I can't get Autoprotect email and email scanning to operate.
I did get all new Virus definitions and automatic Live Update. Any
suggestions as to how I can get the Autoprotect to gon and the email
scanning to operate?

Hi tvans,

Thanks for the good news! What did you do that solved the instopts.dat problem?

Could you do me a favor? Scan your computer with HouseCall (a
thorough online virus scan), just as a double-check. You seem to be
having an awful lot of problems. Also, it wouldn't hurt to scan with
Adaware as well.

HouseCall (scan for virus):

Adaware: (scan for spyware):

Hi tvans,

Installing Norton AntiVirus 2004 or Norton AntiVirus 2004 Professional
Edition that was downloaded from the Symantec Store:
Double-click the "NAV10ESD.exe" icon on the desktop, and then follow
the steps in the Installation Wizard. If you do not see the icon, then
continue on to the next steps.
1. On the Windows taskbar, click Start > Find or Search > Files or Folders.
2. In the Search Results window, set "Look in" to (C:) and check
"Include subfolders".
3. In the "Named" or "Search for..." box, type--or copy and paste--the
following file names: navsetup.exe
4. Click Find Now or Search Now.
5. Double-click NAVSetup.exe.
6. Follow the steps in the Installation Wizard.
7. Restart the computer if prompted.
8. Follow the steps in the Information Wizard to configure NAV.

Hi tvans,

The instopts.dat file seems to be downloadable here (I can't vouch for its safety):
http://www.tools.atrcomputers.com/drivers/Motherboards/GB-7vtxh+/Utility/Norton/Antivirus/English/NAV/

Another thought is that your system may be looking for the file
because you still have some NAV registry keys left behind from the old
installation. You could try running a registry cleaner and delete any
NAV registry keys.

RegCleaner:

Ofcourse, there's always the option of switching to another virus scan
program, such as AVG. It's what I use and I've been very happy with
it.

Good luck,
