I believe it is a method of using the same template to design a car.
It usually involves the same framework, which makes 'the floor' of the
car. Or the same 'cage' of the car, onto which the new design will be
built. Many manufacturers are using those systems. For example VW
would have the same plattform for some Audi and Skoda models, given
they are the same class i.e. saloon or coupe. By floor, cage or
plattform I mean the robust construction which holds the car together.
I will usually not see those parts as all the other staff is mounted
onto it. However if you look at a car from beneath, you will find that
there is big metallic skelleton which covers the whole area and makes
the floor of the vehicle. So if you want a facelift, you would take
that and simply add new cover design onto it. Sometimes, it involves
more old parts, like motor, suspension, transmission etc. which you -
the buyer - could not distinguish. |
