Excerpt:

?The future journalist was born Carolyn Gertrude Amelia Donovan in
1928 in Lake Placid, New York. Her father abandoned the family, and
Donovan and her sister lived with their maternal grandparents for
several years while their mother worked. As a teen, Donovan was keenly
interested in fashion design, but was a terrible sewer. Her mother
reportedly had to bribe a home-economics teacher at Donovan's high
school in order for her to obtain a passing grade in the class. After
taking a job in the hat department at luxe New York City retailer Saks
Fifth Avenue, Donovan enrolled in the Parsons School of Design. Again,
she had trouble meeting the technical requirements for a degree, and
allegedly paid a classmate to take the sewing test before her 1950
graduation.?

Excerpt:

?From the beginning, Ms. Donovan's career had a screwball quality
worthy of Hollywood. Though she studied dressmaking at the Parsons
School of Design, she could never master a needle and thread. She
lacked a similar command of automobiles and typewriters, and as a
reporter for The New York Times, then as an editor for Vogue, Harper's
Bazaar and The New York Times Magazine, she wrote all her copy by
hand.?

Fashion Editor Carrie Donovan Dies at 73
By Kim Wilson

Excerpt:

?She worked at the New York Times from 1955 to 1963 when she left to
take up an editor's position at Vogue under Diana Vreeland. She left
Vogue in 1972 to become senior fashion editor at rival Harper's Bazaar
and moved on to be vice president of communications at Bloomingdale's
in 1976. But the world of corporate communications was not for
Donovan, who was drawn back to the Times in 1977, eventually becoming
deputy editor of the New York Times Magazine.?
