Part I. I need information about massacres and other abuse of Mayan Indians especially in or around the area of San Miguel Ixtlahuacan or Tejutla, Department of San Marcos, Guatemala, during the period 1988-90. The locations El Triunfo, La Cumbre and Solola may also help. Some people who were killed in other incidents include Gregorio Aguilar, Celso Ajpop, ?Beto? Mejia, his father Teodoro Mejia; and a pastor named Efrain Ventura. Times before and after may also be helpful. Part II. I need evidence of violence against Guatemalans who return to their homes, especially in the highland areas. Since the Peace Accords were signed in Guatemala, a number of Guatemalan exiles have gone home. When they try to re-claim their houses and lands, the people who stayed home during the civil war have resisted handing over the property, partly because they just want it, partly because they think they earned it by suffering through the hard times, and partly because they think the returnees are associated with the former guerrillas, while those who stayed are tied to the Civil Defense Patrols, the military or the police. In other words, the polarization of the civil war years is still a cause of violence. This is what I would like to document in order to help a client whose entire family was killed by the military in about 1989, when he was a kid. Thank you in advance for your assistance with this research! |

Two books on Guatemala that discuss the violence against Maya peoples, their escape to Mexico and their return to the highlands are: Paradise in Ashes by Beatriz Manz published by U. California Press in 2004. It is rich in footnotes that may further your research Return of Guatemala?s Refugeess: Reweaving the Torn by Clark Taylor, published by Temple University in 1998 addresses the return specifically I saw no references to the exact places or people mentioned in your question. However, these books both address the topic of your interest. I am not a google researcher ? just a wannabe ? but could not resist bringing these books to your attention. libby |
