Hi there - Bought a second-hand Compaq Deskpro off some dodgy guy. He
had it formatted to Windows 2000, but as all my programs and hardware
I needed to fit were for 98SE I reformatted the hard drive. This
worked EXCEPT that the default monitor driver chosen by 98SE doesn't
seem to connect to the inbuilt video card ? Or something ! There is no
video card per se, not in a PCI slot, so I assume it is part of the
motherboard. But 98SE is not recognising it - I have only 16 colours
!!! There's no information on or in the case as to what I need to find
a driver for (everything just says Made in China...). Was the Deskpro
built only for Windows 2000 ? Is there no way of getting 98SE to
recognise the video card ? I cannot reformat to 2000 as the cd wasn't
part of the deal...

Used a program called Belarc Advisor to try to find more information
about the 'new' PC. Not all of this makes sense to me but may be
useful for analysis !

System Model

The system serial no/asset tag/ and chassis no are all identical

Main Circuit Board

Bus clock 66 mghz

Oh - http://support.hp.com is the site Everest says for me to look at.
I went there and put Intel i752 into the searchbox and got the list
below, but am not sure what it means !

Going even deeper into the Everest program I find :-

Intel 82810E GMCH - Graphics Controller

Is this closer to what I need ?

Looking up Compaq Deskpro EP Series on the internet I find :-

http://www.001abc.com/desktop/compaq_deskpro_ep_series_towerab.html

This seems to indicate that its is BUILT to be an NT machine ? Does
that mean that Windows 98se is not appropriate for it ?

There's also 'some' video information lower down :-
Video
Controller name : Integrated Intel 3D graphics
Minimum memory value : 4MB
Memory type : SGRAM
Maximum video resolution : 1280 x 1024

This may not be relevant to what's sitting in the front room of my
house, but is possibly similar ?

I'll up the price if someone can sort this out for me

Wolvies-ga:

Based on the information you have provided about your second-hand PC,
it appears to be a Compaq Deskpro EP C466/810. The complete list of
Deskpro EP models can be found here:

http://h18007.www1.hp.com/support/files/Deskpro/us/family/17.html?locale=en_US&prodSeriesId=96269

The driver support page for your specific Compaq EP w/466MHz Celeron
and Intel 810e chipset, can be found at:

http://h18007.www1.hp.com/support/files/Deskpro/us/locate/4_379.html

On this page, you will find the "Intel 3D Direct Graphics Video Driver
For Windows 9X" driver, the download page for which is:

http://h18007.www1.hp.com/support/files/Deskpro/us/download/9774.html

Please download the approx. 3.8MB driver file, then follow the
instructions provided on the above page in the "Installation" section
to "unpaq" and install it.

Windows 98SE, by default, will only recognize a small set of video
chips during initial installation, so invariably when you install
Windows 98SE onto an older machine, you need to locate the video
driver yourself. Fortunately, even after the merger between HP and
Compaq, the Compaq driver library/database survived. While there are
alternate online repositories where drivers may be found, it is always
best to source it straight from the manufacturer when available.

Please note that there are also drivers for the onboard audio, the
Intel chipset (for power management, detailed drive control, etc.),
the special Compaq keyboard with its EasyAccess buttons (if it came
with this second-hand PC), modem, network adapter, as well as the
Compaq utilities. I strongly urge you to download these as well, and
save them to a secure place in case you need them again in the future.

If you run into any problems using this driver, please let me know and
I will help you troubleshoot the problems.

LOL, not really asking for clarification of the ANSWER but you
mentioned downloading the other drivers - I don't know which audio one
to dl, but the audio isn't working either (it was perfect before). I
tried to dl two of them and they haven't made any difference...

The keyboard that came with the thing is probably an analogue of the
Compaq one you describe (for analogue read cheaper rip-off perhaps) -
it has all these flash bits to it, and doesn't seem too happy with the
default driver... It did come with a floppy though so I'm going to see
if the driver is on there...

Thanks again :)
