I am looking for printed material about the Survey Lodge Ranger

structure is located on 17th Street and Independence Ave. I am trying
to find out about it's history and how it has been used over the last
100 years. If anyone can help me out I would greatly apprecaite it.

I am willing to increase the amount I will pay if anyone wants to make
a few (washington DC local telephone calls) to see if they can find
any more infromation. I believe the information can be found and but
it might not be directly on the computer.

Hello stephenh-ga,

I live in DC and -- if this question remains unanswered -- sometime in
the next day or two I'll try to stroll over to 17th and Independence
(NW, I hope) and see what there is to see...

Stay tuned.

That would be great if you could do that for me. I really would apprecaite it.
I know you can't indifty yourself, but there was a local historian at
the NPS who very recently wrote me and told me that he found out
information on one of the National Register sites that this "Survey
Lodge Ranger station" was historic. I looked for myself on just about
every historic site I could think of but I couldn't find it. After
the first e-mail from him and I ask for a follow-up e-mail he hard to
get in contact with.
I believe that you can tell that this is a historic structure in one
way or another is if it has a plaque. Maybe you can have better luck
than I have, had. Please do let me know what you find out.

stephenh-ga,

Haven't managed to get over there yet, and probably won't for a few
days, but I haven't forgotten you either. If no one else provides an
answer in the meantime, I hope to be able to get back to with some
info later this week.

Hello again,

Well, it's a spectacular spring day in Washington, so I made some
time, and took a walk over to the Survey Lodge. There I was told by
an extremely friendly volunteer that there is a Ranger on duty today
who is "intimately familiar" with the history of the area and the
building. Of course...he wasn't there.

But I do hope to follow up with him soon.

In the mean time, I was told by the back-up Ranger, who isn't
intimately familiar, but is somewhat familiar, with the history, that
the Survey Lodge was -- guess what! -- a lodge for the surveyors and
was built around the 1840's. It must have been a noisy place for the
surveyors to get any thinking done, because the basement of the Lodge
housed the steam generator that was connected to the Washington
Monument building site via underground pipes, which carried steam to
the elevator used to haul workers and material up the monument.

There is not, apparently, any printed material that focuses directly
on the Survey Lodge, although there appears to be bits and pieces of
information that have accumulated over the years in the mind of our
nowhere-to-be-found Ranger.

If I can learn more, I'll post an answer to your question.

Hello stephenh,

I noticed this question is going to expire soon, and I was wondering
if you still wanted the information I gathered regarding the Survey
Lodge? ie.

Who built it.

The date it was started and completed.

How much it cost.

Very best regards

Yikes...I lost track of time and didn't realize this was so close to
expiring (thanks to thx1138-ga for pointing that out!).

I spoke with the ranger/resident historian at the Survey Lodge, who
was kind enough to send me a package of information about the early
days of the Lodge. He also promised a set of follow-up materials on
its subsequent history, but that hasn't arrived yet, unfortunately.

If and when it comes, I'll post a comment here to let you know, and if
you want to re-open the question at that point, you're certainly
welcome to.

To pafalafa-ga

Yes, I would love to know about the stuff which the park ranger sent
you but I know that you can't send it to me because we can't identify
ourselves. I bet that it does have a lot of interesting information in
it about the Suvery Lodge Ranger Station. Oh well... I would have
enjoyed seeing but I am no longer desperate for it, as I believe I got
enough information about from some other resources on the internet.
But I want to say thank you anyhow, and I am glad you didn't forget
about me

The Survey Lodge, also built of overstock stone from the monument's
construction, houses a park ranger station southwest of the obelisk.
