Need a JPEG photo of Bill Heppner
Graduated 1987 from Crystal Lake Central High School in Crystal Lake,
IL. Was in an ABC televised game on April 12, 1987 - the McDonald's
All-Star Game - went to Depaul and played basketball there until at
least 1989.
There was an article in the Chicago Tribune written by Barry Temkin on
Nov. 13, 1986 that contains a photo of him - the article name was
"LOYOLA LANDS "GREAT SCORER" ILLINOIS, DEPAUL AMONG WINNERS IN
RECRUITING WARS: (SPORTS FINAL, C EDITION) |

Hi there,
The Chicago Tribune article you mentioned is actually available
online...you can get an actual image of the article photos and all.
It won't be in JPEG, though. Probably PDF.
Is this of interest?

Yes - a pdf would be fine - I had paid the tribune subscription rate
and even called them and they told me the only way I could get the
picture was from a library that keeps back issues on microfilm - my
library does not have it - so if you can get that it would be great -
when I looked up the article it simply showed as a note that a photo
was included and the "name" of the photo is Bill Heppner - so I'm
assuming it should work.
I appreciate your help.

bea4788-ga,
I was getting ready to tell you how foolish those folks at the Trib
are for not knowing their own archive system. But it turns out I was
the one who was a bit foolish. The Tribune is archived by Proquest,
and every other Proquest-paper I've ever accessed has actual images of
the newspaper pages, often going back a century or more. But
apparently, the 1986 archives for the Tribune are, in fact, text-only,
so there's no picture to be had. Sorry I didn't realize this earlier.
I'll keep looking. But I also want to encourage other researchers to
do the same, in case they can uncover something that I might overlook.
All the best,

Even though I know of the picture in the Tribune - there must be a way
to get a photo of the 1987 McDonald's All Star Team - I believe he was
on the west team. I would think Sports Illustrated would publish a
picture of the team - I couldn't get anywhere on their website. The
McDonald's All Stars has a website but only listed names, I couldn't
find team pictures, a team picture would also work. A team picture of
the DePaul team for fall season 1987 to 1988 would work - his career
was cut short due to injury - he "retired" in Jan of 1991. I think he
has an MBA from Northwestern.

Just wanted to get a sense of how close you might be getting - if it
cannot be provided today, I can get to a university who has the
Tribune on microfilm - it's a long drive, so I'm trying to avoid it.
Please also let me know the policy that if you cannot locate the photo
- how is my payment handled - is there any kind of adjustment - I do
understand that someone is spending time trying to locate that and I
want to be fair, but it would be tough to spend the fee and not get
the photo.
Please advise as soon as possible.

Hello there,
I am no closer to the photo today than I was the other day...the
university microfilm might be your best bet at this point.
As for payment, don't worry. There is a 50 cents fee for lising a
question, and that will be charged to you. But the fee you offered --
$100 -- isn't charged unless you receive an actual answer to your
question. Which, I'm sorry to say, you haven't.
Let us know if you get the photo on your own, so that the researchers
here won't continue to pursue this question.
Best of luck...

Thank you so much for your efforts - I will try to get to the
university later today or tomorrow. We'll leave it at that for now -
I don't want to waste anyone's time when I know one place where I
should be able to get it.
The fee was worth it as it keeps me working at my desk instead of the
3 hours it will take to get to the library.
I'm pleased to know this resource is here for future "challenges"
Thanks again.
