I read some time ago in the New York Times Science section about a
species of bird that hatches earlier in Spring than other species.
The notion was that most birds time their hatching for when food is
most abundant, but this species took advantage of the fact that if you
time your hatching for when food is most abundant, so will the
competition for the food. By hatching earlier this species has less
food available, but much less competition. Do you know the species in
question?
