Please provide statistics on the number of injuries or deaths that
have been attributed to the use of seat belts and/or airbags in the
past 10 years. Please provide statistics for Illinois, then a
separate statistic for the entire United States.

Hello alicat4-ga,

My preliminary research located some statistics for injuries caused by
airbags. I haven't found much for seat belts. You might have better
luck getting an answer to this question if you split it up to ask
about air bags and seat belts separately. Also, will you accept an
answer even if specific statistics for Illinois cannot be located?
Thanks.

Hello czh.........Please send reply for seat belts and airbags
separately, if that will allow me more information........please let
me know first what additional charges there will be, if any. Yes, I
will accept answers even if specific info can not be obtained for
Illinois separately. Thank You, Alice

The people who report death and injury typically believe the air bags
and seat belts solve more problems than they cause, so they will not
mention the seat belt or air bag in their report unless it is clearly
the cause. The result is under reporting.
In most cases where people died in spite of wearing seat belts, the
probability is low that they would have been thrown out of the vehicle
and lower that they would have survived being thrown from the vehicle.
Conversely those who survive being thrown from their vehicle typically
would have survived anyway, if the their seat belt had kept them in
when the door opened. Neil
