The people who report death and injury typically believe the air bags and seat belts solve more problems than they cause, so they will not mention the seat belt or air bag in their report unless it is clearly the cause. The result is under reporting. In most cases where people died in spite of wearing seat belts, the probability is low that they would have been thrown out of the vehicle and lower that they would have survived being thrown from the vehicle. Conversely those who survive being thrown from their vehicle typically would have survived anyway, if the their seat belt had kept them in when the door opened. Neil |
