Question ID: 333744
I am having some serious connectivity problems with my DSL at home.
Especially in the evenings the connection will go down, frequently
more then once. This sometimes happens over and over every 5-10
minutes. I have checked all my filters, even bought a "special" DSL
phone wire after BellSouth tech support told me that the distance my
modem is from the jack(~20 feet) could be effecting performance. I've
tried disconnecting every phone in my house and leaving only the DSL
connection and yet I still get connectivity interruptions. I've tried
running every tweaking program I could get my hands on and adjusting
the internal settings in Windows to no effect. I should also say that
I had somewhat similar problems with my previous DSL provider,
Earthlink, which leads me to suspect that the actual problem lies in
the wiring either inside or outside my house. Before I cross that
bridge with BellSouth I want to ask if there is anything I might have
possibly overlooked that could help me solve this problem without
shelling out cash to have my wiring checked/redone.

For the record I use a Westell Wirespeed modem going at an advertised
speed of 1.5mb/250k down/up using PPoE. I have Windows XP Proffesional
as my operating system and a LinkSys LNE100TX Fast Ethernet Adapter.

1. I am not sure how far my house is from the local CO. I know that
BellSouth HQ in downtown Atlanta is about 8-10 miles from Decatur, GA
where I live. If you know of I way I could find out the distance
please let me know and I will be happy to do it.
2. The neighborhood is about 15 years old and so is the house.
3. That modem in your link looks similar but is not exactly my modem.
My modem is Wirespeed DSL Modem Model: B90-220030-04 Revision: F
a picture can be found at

I wasnt able to find a page with its specs though.
4. The jack I currently use is the only on on the second floor of the
house and I havent tried using another jack downstairs.

I've been working with DSL for quite a while. But I need to know a couple things.

1: What is your distance to the CO (Central Office).
2: How old is your neigborhood and how old is your house?
3: I may need to know a few setting in yor modem, is this your modem?

4: Have your tried hooking this modem in another jack (nearest where
your phoneline enters the house)
