According to the 2003 annual report of Johnson & Johnson, the global
skin care market is worth $43 billion per year. In June 2002, the
Italian magazine Italia Imballagio estimated that there are more than
14,000 cosmetics producers worldwide.

"Through acquisitions and, more importantly, strong post-acquisition
growth, we now hold a leading position in the highly-fragmented $43
billion per year global skin care market."

Johnson & Johnson: 2003 Annual Report
http://www.jnj.com/2003AnnualReport/features/skin/

"There are more than 14,000 cosmetics producers worldwide, with some
1000 in Italy where nearly all product areas grew in 2001."

While I was researching this, I came across a site that you may find interesting:

Euromonitor: Global skin care

Euromonitor: Skin care

Google search strategy:

Google Web Search: "skin care market" + "worldwide OR global"

I hope this meets your needs. If anything is unclear or incomplete,
please request clarification; I'll be glad to offer further assistance
before you rate my answer.

Thanks for this. I had found the Johnson & Johnson report. Can you
find two corroborative data points for the market size?

Can you find any corrobarative data for the number of cosmetics
companies, especially with respect to Neil's comment. Let's say we are
not interested in cosmetics companies/entities with annual sales of
less than 500 000 EUR/USD.

Although I had found the EuroMonitor site you found some more
interesting and useful pages there.

This headline from January 2004 refers to the "50 Billion Dollar Plus
Skin Care Industry":

"ADSOUTH to Enter 50 Billion Dollar Plus Skin Care Industry With
Binding Letter of Intent to Acquire DermaFresh."

Skin Care India
http://www.skincareindia.com/latest/default.asp?newsID=27

Here is an estimate of $65 billion for worldwide sales of cosmetic products:

"...it is interesting to take a brief look at the cosmetics industry
in general. It probably doesn?t come as much of a surprise to learn
that cosmetics sales represent a multibillion-dollar industry.
Although it is difficult to obtain highly accurate figures (one could
even debate what, exactly, should be classified as a ?cosmetic?),
informed estimates place annual sales in the United States alone near
the $20-billion mark. Worldwide sales are estimated at $65 billion."

American Chemical Society

Regarding neilzero's remarks, I'd like to point out that this person
is not a Google Answers Researcher. He is a frequent commenter who
pulls figures out of his head. He likes to make estimates on things
without documentation.

The figure of 14,000 cosmetics manufacturers worldwide is confirmed here:

"Of a total of around 14,000 cosmetics manufacturers worldwide,
approximately 1,000 are based in Italy and a hundred or so in
Piemonte."

Centro Estero
http://www.centroestero.org/Page/t08/view_html?idp=529

I have not been able to find data on the number of cosmetics companies
with annual sales of less than 500,000 EUR/USD. Such a detailed
breakdown of market research data is unlikely to be available from
free online sources. For more in-depth information, you may want to
consider purchasing one of these reports:

Market Research

I hope this helps!

Counting the tiny tiny cosmetic companies there may be several
million. Some produce hundreds of types, others only one product that
may be boarder line cosmetic/skin care. Is insect repellent to put on
your skin a cosmetic since it may prevent ugly insect bites? In some
cases the company/proprietership is mostly non-cosmetic products and
services, but sells another companies product with a private lable. Do
you want to count franchies, and subsideraries as separate companies
in all or some situations? Numbers with high confidence are unlikely,
but perhaps someone can make educated guesses. Neil

An "educated", believeable, ball-park figure will be acceptable!

Did you want to have a look at the other two questions? :-)

I did attempt to find information for your other two questions. I
wasn't able to locate the statistics that you need for those, but the
questions are fully open for other Researchers. It is possible that
someone may have access to source material that isn't available to me.
