A note to my fellow GA Researchers: 1. The person is listed in the 1850 Census of Somerset County, PA; Summit Township (where today's Meyersdale is located). He is listed as William P. Welshone, tailor, between 24 and 26 years old. Also listed is one Harriet Welshone, 18 years old, probably his wife. ftp://ftp.us-census.org/pub/usgenweb/census/pa/somerset/1850/pg0266a.txt 2. William P. Welshone was not born in Meyersdale, still named Dale City or Meyer's Mills then (note the differing spelling of the family name): "W. P. Welshons was the first tailor. He settled here in 1848." http://www.meyersdale.org/history/welfleyhistory.html 3. He appears as William P. Welshons, Dale City, in a list of Somerset County, Pennsylvania Will Testators: http://www.sampubco.com/wills/pa/pasomerset02.htm Many persons, possibly all belonging to one large family, with many different spellings of the name (Welshonse, Welshauns, Welshonce, Welchhance, Welshons, Welshonts, Welshonse, Welchanse, Welshans, Welschans etc.) lived and live in the PA counties surrounding Somerset County. The 1870 Federal US Census, available through the www.Ancestry.com subscription service, shows your William P. WILSHONS, aged 46, tailor, wife Harriet (38) and 7 children aged between 20 and 1, all born in PA, living at Summit Township, Somerset Co. PA. The 1860 Federal US Census, available from the same source, shows him in the same location: William P. WELSHONS, aged 35, tailor, with wife Harriet (29) and three children aged between 8 and 2. Hope this is some help to you. If you don't have any success getting an answer here, try one of the more genealogy oriented query boards. Brett |

Also the 1881 Census, available online free from the LDS site at http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp?PAGE=census/search_census.asp gives William's widow Harriet WELSCHANCE, aged 47, and two children living at Meyersdale, Somerset Co. PA. Not directly relevant to your question, but perhaps helps to follow the family through the years. Regards and best wishes, Brett |
