Question ID: 334895
I have purchased a new computer. The old computer is Windows ME and
the new one is Windows XP. I can get the old computer to boot up but
it is very cranky. The old computer has serial, parallel and usb 1.0.

The new computer has usb 2.0 and all of the other ports.

Is there a simple way to connect the two computers so that I can
selectively copy files to the new computer without having to buy a
utility? I only want to retrieve word files, some spreadsheets, zip
files and songs.

Are you willing to spend any money on additional hardware? If so, how
much? If not, what hardware do you have that can be used to connect
them?

The reason I don't want to buy any software is I am not sure that I
can install it on my old (cranky) machine. I was hoping I could just
get it booted up in safe mode and then connect it to the new machine
with via either serial cable (null modem cable) or USB...

Well, buying a software package might be the best way:
