In the U.S.: Low Density Polyethylene (LDPE): >9 billion pounds in 1991 High Density Polyethylene (HDPE): >8 billion pounds in 1991 (George Odian, "Principles of Polymerization", 3rd Edition; John Wiley and Sons, Inc., New York: 1991) I don't have data for global production. For all polymers (not just polyethylene), I'm not sure the answer is attainable, since how a given market researcher defines "polymer" would be somewhat vague. Would you include natural polymers (proteins, etc.)? Textiles (nylon, polyester)? Consumer goods that become a polymer when used (adhesives, some coatings)? |

I'm interested in the total production of synthetic polymers... discarding consumer goods that become polymers as well as the natural ones. |
