There are dozens more dance studios in San Diego than there are acting studios for people of any age. Indeed, there are just a handful of non-academic settings where one can learn the art of acting, yet there are so many places people of all ages can learn to dance, in addition to academic settings. First, that says something about dance as the people's art form, and second, it says something about the inequity of the professional art form of dance, which is almost invisible compared to the vast array of acting companies, profit and non-profit in San Diego and elsewhere. How is it that dance theatre, so widely embraced in the tens of thousands of studios accross the country cannot compete at the professional level with acting theatre? |
