One successful case study has been Central Scotland Police which uses SUSE Linux and Sun StarOffice: Working in partnership with SUSE LINUX, Central Scotland Police has pioneered a range of systems and facilities previously unavailable in other forces. They installed an Oracle 8i server running on SUSE LINUX to support their mission-critical Command and Control system. http://www.suse.com/en/company/customer_references/central_scotland_police.html Configuration: StarOffice suite Sun Ultra 60 server for StarOffice software 30 Intel/Linux office servers for Staroffice software 400 PC/Windows desktops for StarOffice software 10 Sun servers for business applications http://wwws.sun.com/software/star/staroffice/6.0/successstories/CSP.html 'The aim in the foreseeable future is to do away with Microsoft [products] altogether,' Chief Inspector Stewart Marshall said." http://linux.bryanconsulting.com/stories/storyReader$59 "Use Proven Cost-Killers" - Open Source At Work With Central Scotland Police http://www.effectiveit2004.com/pdf/Jim%20Jarvie.pdf Owain |

at SuSE http://www.suse.de/de/index.html ( select your country on the right side ) you find complete operating system with a large selection of freeware ( GPL ) 7 CD or 1 DVD - for almost every possible technical or scientific and office appolication. download of full OS for free possible first purchase of 1 set ( approx 4.5 GB ) on DVD recommended. 1 set can be installed on ANY number of PCs ! hence ideal for administration and governments. additional software under GPL can be found from GNU http://www.gnu.org/ or directly in GNU software http://www.gnu.org/directory/ much of these GNU packages are already on the SuSE DVD. other professional applications under GPL license for a large variety of different needs can be found at http://sourceforge.net/ and at http://freshmeat.net/ with the wealth of Linux andits software pool - any administration can cover the full range of needs - considering the fact that an administration usually has at least one or a few professional system administrators and software developer who can adapt, modify or expand existing GPL-licensed software to the specific need. one small expample |
