"Jolie adopted the 7-month-old orphan while making "Beyond Borders."
The child arrived in Africa by plane from his native Cambodia halfway
through the shoot. But director Martin Campbell (who took over when
Stone dropped out) says Jolie never missed a step during that big
transition in her life.
"She always showed up on time and never complained," recalls Campbell,
a native New Zealander who previously directed the mountain-climbing
adventure "Vertical Limit."
Learning how to parent while shooting a movie in Africa was a bit
daunting for the actress. "I had never changed a diaper before and I
didn't know if kids had to have 10 bottles or two bottles a day," she
says. "I called my mother and asked a lot of questions of the local
African women. They helped me learn how to carry the baby in a sling.
If I had been in L.A., I would have gotten a bunch of packages and all
the things you think you need ... and instead, we really had nothing
and we were fine."
