?The Beverly Johnson-brand hair, black and shiny, reveals nothing of
its long journey from the head of the woman who shaved it off. The
brand is imported from China through ports in Los Angeles and New York
before it reaches warehouses in Conshohocken, Pa., says Peter
Knappenberger, general manager for Amekor Industries, which claims $25
million in annual sales from its hair brands, including the Beverly
Johnson line.?
?Officials at the company ? whose name derives from the nationalities
of its founders: ''American'' and ''Korean'' ? have said that while
their hair comes from a variety of sources, east Indian hair is the
standard for extensions.?

The Amekor website (www.amekor.com)is currently being redesigned and
will be up later this spring.
?We?re redeveloping our Web site to be more interactive and drive more
business to our dealers,? says Lisa Jaswinski, graphic artist and
marketing coordinator for Amekor Industries (www.amekor.com). ?It
should be up and running sometime this spring and will feature a Wig
Genie program that allows users to input their face, nose and eye
shapes, and then try on 10 different wig styles.
Amekor Industries. Hair goods may be a recent sensation in the general
market, but the ethnic market has always produced high hairpiece
sales. Amekor Industries, based in Conshohocken, Pennsylvania,
reports that pigtails, braids and wiglets have been perpetual
best-sellers since they were first introduced nearly 15 years ago. ?We
actually have 20 different hairpieces in our Beverly Johnson brand
that sell very well year-round,? says Amekor chairman Steve
Perchick. ?Extensions are as hot as ever, with ponytails and braids
definitely among our best-sellers.?

?Folks at Amekor Industries are hyped over the fact that the company's
spokesperson is coming in on Nov. 18 to do a photo shoot for its
product catalog. Who can blame them? The spokesperson is supermodel
Beverly Johnson.?
?Amekor Industries of Conshohocken, makes wigs and hair extensions for
the black female market. Lee Shelly, Amekor's director of marketing,
thinks Johnson's background makes her a good fit for their business.
"We have a history of dealing with pioneer black women," he said.
