How can I check the assets, ie real estate owned and bank accounts for
my x-wife, anything where she is on title?

In my experience, private eyes can be very good at digging out
information that would be out-of-reach for most of us.

Some of them are ex-cops and they have 'contacts'.

If you know what county she lives in, many counties have land records
online where you could check her real estate assets by name or by
address.  (Just saying she lives in the "Bay Area" is not helpful
enough--you need to mention the exact city.

As far as the bank accounts go, only a private investigator could find
out that information for you.

There is a word that describes what you're looking for and if there is
a child involved you both have the legal right to perform it on the
other.  I cant remember what it is called though.  Most law firms let
you call them for free to go over the basics of getting divorced. 
They wont give you any legal advice though.  I know a friend of mine
did this through a service and it cost each of them 5,000 dollars.
