Howdy philbo64-ga,
As one might guess, the exact details of installing a vinyl fence depends on
which style of fence you are considering. There are different section widths
and different post sizes, etc. I have found some sites that provide several
sets of instructions which cover various styles and sizes of vinyl fencing,
along with details on gate installation.
To view any of the following PDF document(s), you will need the free Adobe
Acrobat Reader. If you do not have it, you can download it from Adobe.

Even if you already have the Adobe Acrobrat Reader, if it is an older version
I urge you to download the latest version (6.0) as it has some neat features.
Even though the Hoover Fence Co. is a commercial operation, they strive to be
the "largest online fence resource" and to that end they have quite a bit of
very useful information on the installation process. Their instructions cover
enough styles and contain the same basic steps as other companies, so I am
sure the generic information (placement, gates, etc.) is applicable to most
any installation.
Their "Installation Tips for Vinyl Fence and Accessories" is a great starting
point.

You want to know the "lingo" so you can chat up the contractors, so here is
a PDF file that contains a glossary, a diagram of "Fence System Components,
a list of "Tools and Materials" plus general information including "Concrete
Requirements" and gate tips.

The essential questions that you need to ask are outlined on their "Which
style of vinyl fence is right for you and your family?" page.
http://vinyl.hooverfence.com/style-choice.htm
- What style of fence do I need?
- What installation method do I want to use?
- How many sections are needed?
- How many posts of each type are needed?
To get into specifics, you will want to go their "Vinyl Index" page.

You will want to look at the various styles and find one to your tastes. For
instance, they have several models of "Traditional" fences.

One of those is the "Charleston Concave" style.

There they have a PDF file that shows details of placement and hole depth.

Some "nitty gritty" information on installation can be found on the Gardner
Fence web site. Scroll to the bottom of the following page for some good
general tips, especially on the concrete work. Keep in mind that measures
given on that page are for that installation only, and different styles of
fence take different center measures, as noted in the PDF files above.

If you are somewhat ambitious and if the fence isn't going to be very big,
you might consider doing it yourself. The process seems to be straight
forward, and the Hoover site has several stories from their clients.
